Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
4/5
I am a service delivery engineer for Openreach. I repair telephone lines and provide service to customers. I also maintain the netwrok and fix faults in the netwrok and the exchange if needed. I am in my van all day driving around to different customers premises to complete my job
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
4/5
The programme is challenging and sometimes overwhelkming, but is rewarding and in general enjoyable. There is a lot of pressure which is sometimes not enjoyable, but I am enjoying learning new skills and developing myself. I look forward to the pay rise and becomi9ng a good engineer in the future.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
4/5
I have learnt a lot of new skills. I had no previous experience in engineering or telecomms so I have started from scratch to learn how to become a SD engineer. I have learnt how to climb poles and how to use my tester to find faults in the network

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
4/5
The programme is really well organised. Yopu have a set out training plan you follow and then have a buddying period to work on these with a confident engineer. You also have set days to work on your qualification out of the workplace which is nice. Sometimes things change last minute.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
4/5
I recieve a lot of support from my assessor, [This section of the comment has been removed by a member of the Higherin Team because it did not meet our site terms and conditions]. This is around my qualification. Support from my line manager is generally good, however it can feel sometimes that I am thrown into the deep end and sometimes they forget I am an apprentice still. Support from engineers is great
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
5/5
As above:
I recieve a lot of support from my assessor, Adam George. This is around my qualification. Support from my line manager is generally good, however it can feel sometimes that I am thrown into the deep end and sometimes they forget I am an apprentice still. Support from engineers is great
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
4/5
Some of the content in my qiualification does not seem relevent to my work role. However when my assessor explained the content and how it relates in general then it made a lot more sense. In general the qualification can link to most stuff I do in my job in general.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
4/5
Yeahj thyere is a lot of stuff you can do. We have a learning home system with training you can do on your own. We can also use Linked in training. There is also an academy site with training for using Excel etc if you are unsure how this works.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend BT Group to a friend?
Yes
Why?
The pay is good and the training is really good. You get a qual at the end of it what is great. There are some great benefits you can access and the job is varied so it feels fresh. A lot of people have been in Openreach for years which is good.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to BT Group?
Be prepared to wait. I waited a total of 7 months from applicationn to joining. Luckily I was already in a job but it did at time feel like I had been forgotten. Once in the door though make sure you are switched on and listen. There is a lot to take in!!
