My apprenticeship was to build my way up to being a 'Maintenance Technician'. The different tasks and daily jobs are as follows:
-Planned Electrical/Mechanical Maintenance
-Preventative Maintenance
-Answering breakdowns
-Completing activities to improve 'overall equipment efficiency'
-Constant improvement to quality, throughput and safety of production line
-Electrical and mechanical installations

To what extent do you enjoy your programme?

Loved it. Cummins always made sure we were progressing well with our apprenticeship and always made sure we had what we needed to develop in our role. Our college course was really good and always made sure we were having fun whilst learning our trade. Cummins provided excellent support with our sign off at the end of the apprenticeship.
Skills Development
Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?

Yes. During my time as an apprentice at Cummins, they made sure that the skills that were required in my job role were being developed constantly during the apprenticeship and to the standard that was required. When we were lacking in some areas, Cummins would support us to make sure these skills were developed.

Structure and Support
How well organised/structured is your programme?

The apprenticeship course was very well structured. We had weekly meetings with our internal assessor who would ask questions to gauge whereabouts we were with progressing in our apprenticeship. Our external assessor would have monthly meetings with us to ensure we were progressing with our log-book sign off procedure in order to complete our apprenticeship to the standard required.
How much support do you receive from your employer?

Cummins would always support us when needed. This included support with college work and with general day to day work. They would constantly check in with us to ensure we were progressing at the right level and send us on training to ensure we were at the right level by the time we had finished our apprenticeship.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?

Our training provider were very good with supporting us throughout our apprenticeship. The training provided was very good and whenever you may have needed help in specific areas, they would tailor the lessons to your needs. They also added additional learning to the course of which helped us with adapting learning at college to the workplace.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?

The qualification gained throughout my apprenticeship has taught me a lot of useful things that I have needed in the workplace. They taught us theory but also gave us hands-on practice which helped us when applying knowledge in the workplace as this makes you more familiar with the different systems of engineering.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)

Yes. There is a sports and social club of which I have joined which have regular activities. They have regular events of which you can join in with and regular activities with other Cummins plants. This includes a yearly football match with another Cummins plant. I think this is a really good way to improve morale in the workplace.

Why?
The skills I have developed throughout my apprenticeship are universal skills of which can be used anywhere I may go in the future. Cummins is a very good company to work for who ensure all their staff are happy with the work they are doing and ensure that the morale is high.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Cummins?
I would suggest that anyone who applies for a Cummins apprenticeship should carry out extra curricular activities to stand out. Cummins is a very competitive company of which is hard to secure a job. I would advise that people applying for a job at Cummins to show a genuine interest in diesel engines as this will help them progress when securing a job.
