Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
4/5
Given projects during the different rotations you do around the factory, you are required to talk to speak to many different people that you wouldn't normally talk to. You work independently but can still ask for help when you need it. A hands on and computer based approach for every task you have to complete so its the best of both worlds.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
4/5
The first year was really good as it was full time college and there was a big mix of workshop and normal classroom lessons. There is a good mix of the two and then the second year you start to get more involved in the different areas of the factory and this is when it gets rewarding because you feel more needed and responsible.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
4/5
I have learned to be more confident and i have learned how to ask for help when i need it instead of sitting there keeping my problems to myself. I have learned how to use the different software's that are required in the engineering field. Also how to have a hands on approach in the factory.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
4/5
There are rota's and project plans for the different areas in the factory. Departments will give you time frames to when the projects need to be completed and this really helps with the focus you have in the different projects. You have people you can always talk to so many people for help even if they aren't in your department.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
4/5
You have so much help when you need it, you can talk to your managers or mentors if you need any help and if they aren't unable to help you then they will send you to someone that is able to help you. There is always someone that will be able to help you due to the wide range of people and knowledge that are housed in the factory. You also get a healthcare plan that helps when it comes to medical appointments such as dentist and surgeries.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
4/5
You are the one that should be leading your apprenticeship so as long as you constantly show effort and ask for help on how to move forward and progress you will always receive help. The managers and mentors will always check to see your progress and compare it to how they think you should be getting on.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
4/5
My qualifications have taught me different skills that i use every day in the factory. Some skills such as hands on processes and also software knowledge. Both the college and the company are always teaching you helpful skills that will stay with you long after you finish your apprenticeship course.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
4/5
Due to the current situation regarding COVID-19 there has been less activities that you are able to do, but before COVID there was football teams that you could join and also there are events such as open days that you can volunteer for and there has been go karting days before for the apprentices.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend Cummins to a friend?
Yes
Why?
I feel as if Cummins is a very good company to work for due to the sheer size of the company. You have so many options and paths you can follow and you can basically go anywhere in the company as long as you keep trying and work with the company and not for the company. You need to give and receive feedback so that you can improve and the company can help you progress.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Cummins?
It is a big company but everyone here was once in your shoes during the application process and this is something that you will be able to find interest in no matter what department you are in. The first couple of months may be daunting but this will help you improve your confidence and knowledge in almost any subject due to the amount of career paths you can follow.
