Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
2/5
I work on Ethernet products for small and corporate businesses. This means processing the order from being submitted by sales until its completed. I provide updates to the customer from Openreach and coordinate all the tasks by technical teams to make sure we deliver the service to the customer on time.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
1/5
I don't enjoy the job that I am in as its not as technical as I would like and is very customer service oriented. There are also internal issues within the company that mean you can feel stressed but also expected to meet the same performance as regular higher paid employees.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
3/5
The job is very customer service oriented so I've learnt how to deal with frustrated customers. Its also helped me develop my multi tasking skills because you need to listen to the customer while checking notes on different systems. The job is complex too so its helped me with problem solving.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
1/5
It wasn't very organised. In the first 6 months we weren't told on how to take our study days. The qualification is also not related to the job and it seems like that they just needed cheap resource for the team. At times it was a struggle to complete the coursework.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
2/5
There are regular performance meetings with coaches and line managers. You are also taught how to do the job by experienced people who take their time with you and make sure you understand the job. Unfortunately, management act like they are doing us a favour by giving us our study days which are a core part of the apprenticeship programme. We are expected to work as regular employees when we earn a lot less.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
3/5
Our training provider was an internal BT team which were okay. They marked our work and had regular meetings to discuss process. We were given units to work on that were impossible to complete since they weren't related to the role. This took a lot of time to figure out.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
2/5
I don't think the qualification it self assists me with my day to day job as most of what I learnt was on the job and used that experience during work. Some of the units were enjoyable to work on though. The qualification is a good one to have and is valuable.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
3/5
There is a Christmas meal every year and the company funds your visit to the restaurant. You can also take 3 days to volunteer for a charity if you wish. I was also given regular opportunities to go to career fairs which were great fun and shadow other teams that we worked with.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend BT Group to a friend?
Yes
Why?
Although my experience wasn't the best, many others that I have talked to have had a better journey. The qualification is very valuable and there is always room to move up to a different job internally. Having BT on your CV will help if you ever decide to search for another job.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to BT Group?
The interview process is quite lengthy but not very difficult. I recommend showing your ambitions and knowing a lot about the company really helps your application. During group exercises always voice your opinion and invite others to do the same since team work is essential in any job. The interviewers are friendly and will give you time to think about your answers.
