Safety and Reliability Intern Review

My job role is centred around measuring risk levels within the company based on Red-Tops that have been logged. Initial risk assessments are then completed using FMECAs and event trees to calculate an initial risk level. From this, reaction times and rates will be calculated and corrective actions are put forward. After a period of time a final, closure risk assessment can be produced that finalises the red-top. Other activities include regular meetings and reviews.

I was given a lot to do! I was never short of work to do and if I was all I had to do was inform my line manager and he would give me extra task to do whilst I waited on emails back from different departments. At any one time I was usually working on 5-6 different tasks. Also, my primary objective was completely independent so I was given a large amount of responsibility in completing this.

I have been able to work on my skills of independence because a lot of the tasks were set to me specifically and I was then able to tackle series of questions on my own. In saying this I also worked with other members of the team on a regular basis so my networking and communication skills have been improved. Finally, I have been able to become more proficient in Excel through my cumulative risk metric task.

Through Rolls-Royce you are given a line manager who is responsible for all the interns and throughout my placement I had 3 meetings with him. My manager was not in my office but we exchanged emails regularly and had weekly meetings. I had interaction with my placement buddy and he was ultimately responsible for my day-to-day work. We formed a close relationship and I could always turn to him if I had any problems or questions. The entire team were always open to help and support me.

It is a very friendly office. It is open plan so everyone is in site most of the time. Due to Covid-19, the office was extremely quiet but I enjoy a quiet working environment in which I can work without distractions. There were always free conference rooms were I could go to take calls and not distract others. I enjoyed working in the office but it was nice to be given the flexibility to work from home.

I absolutely loved my placement. I was not aware of the Safety and Reliability team before I started at Rolls-Royce and even though it was entirely desk based I was still able to network and see different sectors of Rolls-Royce. It was easy to settle into the role and I thrived on all of the challenges that were presented to me. There was never a dull moment and I feel that I got the most out of my placement.
