Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:

My role is based on an electrical engineer with building services, daily/regular tasks involve:
• Calculating the sizes of plant equipment (Transformers, UPS, Generators etc).
• Co-ordination of electrical services
• Developing protection studies within calculation software.
• Communicating with other engineers for service routes and space planning.

To what extent do you enjoy your programme?

Thoroughly enjoyed the program, I honestly feel very lucky that I was able to be a part of it. The teams I've worked with have been great, the company has a really friendly culture and caters to everyone's needs. Surpassed my expectations for sure.
Skills Development
Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?

I've learnt a lot during my time at ARUP and at university, countless software packages, calculation methods, communication methods with others, many electrical building services courses, professional registration, how to deal with deadlines, how to deal with other engineers, site visit skills, documentation skills and presentation skills
Structure and Support
How well organised/structured is your programme?

The program for the degree apprenticeship was well structured, the only times it wasn't was due to the university staff sometimes having a lack of understanding of it. The support program helped build my knowledge up greatly, with engineers of varying experience helping form my understanding of the industry.
How much support do you receive from your employer?

I've been lucky to have very good mentors and line managers during my time at Arup, all have been very understanding and always understood my issues. Study time off was no issue and even at short notice I would be able to get time off
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?

The university were able to offer me lots of support during my degree, they would make sure that any additional lessons I missed due to work commitments would be caught up on and always understood where I was coming from.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?

The university degree I studied was Electronics and Electrical Engineering, however I was told when I started that in the 5 years of my study there would only be one module applicable to my workplace. This wasn't great, as a result I have raised this to the IET.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)

My workplace supports a high level of social activities, every week there is something going on (before covid and lockdown happened). In my time at Arup I've been fortunate enough to go to Amsterdam for football/golf/paintballing etc

Would you recommend Arup to a friend?
Yes
Why?
I really enjoy the company and it's structure, I feel its very supportive of its staff members and looks out for them. My co-workers are all great people and the projects I work on are diverse and vary greatly meaning nothing gets too stagnant
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Arup?
My tips for anyone thinking of joining Arup would be:
-Try to get some knowledge on CAD packages such as AutoCAD/Revit
-Have some understanding of what is building services and what do we do
