Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
5/5
My current role as a Chief Engineer cabler is laying the cables in the ground to be connected to distribution points so the end customer can recieve their broadband service. My Daily jobs vary depending on the need for the customer and the type of area we are working in.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
5/5
I enjoy the programme as this is something I have been passionate about doing for a long time. To be given the opportunity to have the job I have always wanted and learn new skills and knowledge within a company that wants to allow its people to grow is amazing.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
5/5
I have learned the difference between types of cables used within the network and the importance of having the correct cable types depending on the type of area and end user. I have also improved my knowledge using hand tools and heavier machinery such as blowing machines, winches and generators.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
5/5
Due to Covid the structure is different to how I am normally used to it however we are still able to be told in advance of any calls/workshops and allow us time away from our role in order to complete them. This reduces being over worked minimises stress levels.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
4/5
The support is amazing. Any queries or questions that I have there is always someone to help within the right channels. From past experience having an employer that is motivated to help and wants you to learn more is an amazing feeling and to also give us a chance to grow ourselves.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
5/5
We have only just started doing our workshops however just by the first 2 meetings it is clear that our trainers also want us to evolve. By going through each workshop making sure we have a good understanding of what is required of us allowing us to go back into the field knowing what we have to do in order to succeed.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
5/5
It allows me to have a fall back to show that I am capable of doing my role, it alos helps me gain more knowledge and understanding not just of my role but the role of my employer and the importance of the work that we carry out day to day.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
4/5
Due to the pandemic we have not heard of any social events etc being doone however speaking to more tenured colleagues they have said there are regular social meet ups to allow teams to get to know eachother more outside of work, there are also live events that happen for award ceremonies etc.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend BT Group to a friend?
Yes
Why?
Openreach have given me the chance to pursue what i would call my dream job. They have spared no expense to make sure I have the right tools, equipment, clothing and PPE to make sure I can do my role. They look after their staff on both a business and personal level offering all kinds of support programmes should anyone need it.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to BT Group?
As long as you come in/apply with a strong head and eagerness to work hard and progress then you will have no issues. This job is not in any way easy so be prepared for physical and demanding jobs. However although physical and demanding they may be, being able to work in the outside on sunny days and speaking to pedestrians daily helps brighten up your day and makes you forget about the winter days.
