4/5 - Structure and Support

Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
4/5
To install, test and repair communications systems. This includes fixed lone networks, copper wire and fibre optic cabling.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
3/5
I enjoyed learning on the job, sharing ideas and experiences with other engineers. I didn’t enjoy the wet weather working so much, and I did find I struggled with the fast paced work load and the pressure of COVID restrictions impacting how we can complete the job

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
4/5
I have learnt a great deal on how the industry works and how to use the tools provided to me in order to get the job done

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
4/5
The apprenticeship was quite well structured but I found when my tutor left, the new one was a little less supportive and found it hard to pick up where the last one left off.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
4/5
In busy periods it’s hard to get the time to compete certain tasks needed for the apprenticeship. For instance, we need on the job pictures of us showing doing an activity. A lot of the time, we can’t capture this as we work on our own and we can ask the customer to start taking photos of us fitting a socket or setting up a ladder, so this would have to wait until we was on our own time or during apprenticeship days.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
4/5
I like to think that we get quite a lot of support, and if we get stuck on a question, we can ask and they generally show us where we can find extra advice to help us complete the question
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
3/5
I don’t think it makes much of a difference. Maybe in the beginning it helps you grasp more of an idea on how certain things work, but you eventually learn that on the job anyway
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
5/5
No, because of COVID

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend BT Group to a friend?
Yes
Why?
Because it’s a good company to work for and they do offer a lot of support if you have the confidence to ask for it
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to BT Group?
Don’t be afraid to make mistakes and don’t take it too personally if you do mess up. Try and build a lot of contacts you can call on. Take your time and don’t let people rush you.
