Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
3/5
I'm based in the Business Support Group, splitting time between the Administration Services KPMG Team, and a Personal Assistant role to senior stakeholders.
The Administration Services KPMG (ASK) Team provided administrative expertise to KPMG colleagues (currently C-grade and above) from a catalogue of services.
The Personal (or 'Executive') Assitant role consists of being allocated a group of Partners and/or Directors, usually within the same or similar departments, to provide adminstrative expertise for.
Both of these roles can consist of:
ensuring consistent adherence to GDPR;
microsoft Office;
diary management and meeting creation;
bookings (e.g. desks, travel, accomodation, parking);
copy-typing and digital dictation;
expense management;
communication (internal, external, spoken, and written);
creating proposals;
customer service;
data analysis and presentation;
facilities management;
teamwork;
project management;
leadership;
flexibility and adaptability;
self-motivation;
listening;
problem-solving;
monitoring and meeting of service level agreements;
record and document production;
meeting minute-taking;
use of internal systems (e.g. client relationship managment software)
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
3/5
Whilst it wasn't necessarily completely what I was expecting, it has been mutually beneficial for both myself and KPMG. Most of my issues have been down to COVID which isn't exactly normal circumstances, so KPMG have dealt well given the current climate. I think it is a shame that Apprentices on my programme can't rotate around different Business Services functions unless based in London or Watford, but that is due to how the teams are spread across the UK offices so can't be helped.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
4/5
Plenty, including:
adherence to GDPR; Microsoft Office; diary management and meeting creation; bookings (e.g. desks, travel, accomodation, parking); copy-typing and digital dictation; expense management; communication (internal, external, spoken, and written); creating proposals; customer service; data analysis and presentation; facilities management; teamwork; project management; leadership; flexibility and adaptability; self-motivation; listening; problem-solving; monitoring and meeting of service level agreements; record and document production; meeting minute-taking; use of internal systems (e.g. client relationship managment software); coaching and mentoring; and IT

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
4/5
Overall it is very well structured, especially when not faced with a pandemic. There is an extensive student and apprenticeship programmes team that are very on-the-ball with events, initiatives, queries, resourcing, recruitment etc. and the educational aspects have always flowed well in terms of timetabling. Again, the only aspect that has particularly bothered some Apprentices on my programme is not being able to complete departmental rotations if outside of London or Watford.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
3/5
I would say a good amount. They are by no means just an employer - they are defintely more of a community. There is support available centrally for all employees regarding anything from mental health to family, and this could be as simple as a one-pager document, or a counselling service. And then the relationships with managers, ethics champions etc. are strong in most cases and can be relied on for raising concerns.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
4/5
As much as is needed on an individual basis. If you are self-sufficient and don't experience many issues, you aren't going to be bombarded with communication from them, but if you are on the other end of the spectrum, they are always available and helpful. I have personally had to agree on deadline extentions on a couple of occassions wich was easy and not met with hostility. There are also things like managed resit programmes for people who are struggling academically.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
4/5
To a decent extent. I have studied a Level 3 Business Administration qualification, which in itself is an area made up of many transferable business skills and general business knowledge. As are the majority of functions within the wider KPMG Business Services department, including mine (Business Support), so overall it is very applicable.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
5/5
Plenty, off the top of my head:
Employee networks (e.g. LGBTQ+, Women's, African and Caribbean, Chinese, Families, Disability and Mental Health, ex-Veterans etc.)
Corporate responsibility volunteering with our partner charities like NSPCC
Sports teams (e.g. football, netball etc.)
Apprentice Social Committee or Apprentice Voice Represetitive
Champions (e.g. Wellbeing, Ethics, Business Services etc)
Gneral socials are also a thing (e.g. Christmas parties, weekly or monthly team meals and drinks), just more so when everyone is working from the office rather than at home

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend KPMG to a friend?
Yes
Why?
Working for such a large employer comes with many benefits. The salaries are competitive, the holiday allowance is a positive, and the Flextra aspects such as discounted gym memberships and lunch allowance are a bonus. The community environment is encouraging and supportive to the most part and overall have heard good things from others
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to KPMG?
While things like academic performance are important to an extent, it is more about how you carry yourself and whether you have employability skills (interpersonal, business-focused etc.)
Ideal if you feel you can work in a fast-paced environment, as it admitedly isn't a walk in the park, even for those not in client-facing roles.
