My job role is working as a civil engineering technician apprentice towards my level 3 qualification and professional qualification as a member of the Institute of Civil Engineers.
My work consists on providing support to different sectors of Transport for London that relate to Civil Engineering, such as asset maintenance.

To what extent do you enjoy your programme?

During my time on the Civil Engineering Technician Level 3 Apprenticeship program at Transport for London, the amount of training and experience I have gained has been very rewarding for me. While this was limited by the lockdown caused by the COVID-19 Pandemic; this was of no fault to TfL.
Skills Development
Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?

As someone who lives outside of London - where all my prior education and work was only a walking distance away, working with Transport for London has provided me with many valuable skills, such as communication in the work place and applying civil engineering principles to work, that otherwise wouldn't have had the opportunity to experience.

How well organised/structured is your programme?

During my time on the Civil Engineering Technician Level 3 Apprenticeship program at Transport for London, there was a lot of ambiguity around the start of the apprenticeship and even after with constant vague emails from other companies demanding various proofs of residence. Currently as lockdown ends the stucture has held up well
How much support do you receive from your employer?

During my time on the Civil Engineering Technician Level 3 Apprenticeship program at Transport for London, I have received a huge amount of support from my employer and in my placements. If I ask someone at work a question that they cannot answer, they will find some one who will.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?

During my time on the Civil Engineering Technician Level 3 Apprenticeship program at Transport for London, City of Westminster has been terrible in many ways. When we were attending, we went so many different teachers whom of most weren't even Civil Engineers, teachers were rarely given a staff pass so we were seldom registered and it feels like there was a massive disconnection from everyone. Even now working from home, there has been issues with me being marked absent for nearly all college days - all of which I have attended.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?

During my time on the Civil Engineering Technician Level 3 Apprenticeship program at Transport for London, as I said previously, the City of Westminster college has genuinely not been very helpful - where the only objective has been to complete assignments and research the source material ourselves. If we were taught lessons and didn't have vague assignment tasks, it may help our role performance a bit more.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)

During my time on the Civil Engineering Technician Level 3 Apprenticeship program at Transport for London, there is multiple staff network groups, such as Schemes Mental Health. However, maybe due to lockdown, I don't know much about any other social groups at work. Maybe I will find them more when I'm back at the office, but sadly I have not been informed of any.

During my time on the Civil Engineering Technician Level 3 Apprenticeship program at Transport for London, I have gained and experience so much knowledge about the world around me. Transport for London is a really supportive and diverse company and it feels satisfying to complete work that you know will support the local community.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Transport for London?
During my time on the Civil Engineering Technician Level 3 Apprenticeship program at Transport for London, I would say do not worry if you do not have any prior experience or qualifications in engineering. Prior to my apprenticeship at Transport for London, I never had studied academically an engineering subject but now I am on my way to receive a professional qualification in Civil Engineering.
