Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:

Pole Tester, inspection of network telegraph poles utilising various testing methods. Issuing of valid test labels and defective labels on poles. And making arrangements of pole replacements and removal of poles in danger of collapse.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?

The NVQ program has been really enjoyable and informative to complete. I was assigned an NVQ assessor who I had regular NVQ days with, who was really helpful at showing me good techniques of meeting the set criteria.
Skills Development
Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?

Many new skills learnt. Network layout, Pole Testing techniques, Signing and guarding Street-works qualification. Excavation qualification. Completion of Telecoms NVQ at level 2.
Structure and Support
How well organised/structured is your programme?

Very well organised and managed, I never felt on my own and when I had a question regarding any of the criteria it was responded to immediately which really helped things keep moving. I was also given very much support by my assessor.
How much support do you receive from your employer?

I have support anytime I need it, with the company intranet I can find solutions to many of my own questions and can access my HR information and options, access my learning and development progress and my apprenticeship modules and information. Also from my assessor and My Manager daily.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?

My training provider has been really supportive in giving me access to the information and resources that I needed to successfully complete my training including essential skills ICT and my NVQ.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?

Gaining telecoms qualifications has enabled me to become a really confident engineer in my own ability, I also have much knowledge now on laws and regulations which apply to me and techniques in self management which I can apply to various situations that I may be faced with.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)

We have many groups on our own social media ‘Workplace’ which often set up team building exercises and projects to get involved with. I am also invited periodically to take part in a pole test roadshow which is relevant to my role for team building exercises.

Why?
Openreach has everything in place to enable you to have a really promising career and offers many incentives like share plans etc, also really good medical and dental plans to choose from. This combined with all the support in training and development I feel, make Openreach a leader in employment.
