I work in research and development focusing on microbiology:
Processing samples for testing
Reviewing sample testing sessions and documents

To what extent do you enjoy your programme?

I thoroughly enjoy every aspect of it. I can't express how proud I am to have this role and how pleased I am I took this route instead of university. The people around me are so knowledgeable and supportive and give me endless opportunities to progress.
Skills Development
Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?

My confidence has improved dramatically since starting this role. I am now comfortable at public speaking and more generally in myself. The role has made me work well in a team and independently at times - resulting in good time management. I have learned huge amounts about microbiology theory and testing methods. I now also have lots knowledge of the drug development process and clinical trials.
Structure and Support
How well organised/structured is your programme?

Good structure. 1 working day a week dedicated to university studies - other 4 doing scientist role. Regular progress meetings with manager and also with university apprenticeship advisor.
How much support do you receive from your employer?

Continual feedback and support from my manager and all my colleagues in the team. There isn't a single issue that I can't speak to my team about. Everyone is always very encouraging and gives me plenty of opportunities with the support I need to fulfil the task.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?

The support is very good if you reach out to a member of staff at the university and the support from the apprenticeship advisors are good. The general support on the course could be better as it can be quite difficult distance learning on your own.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?

A number of the modules are directly transferable into my current role and the theory behind them is invaluable for doing the job. The practice of scientific writing through the course is essential for my role. There are a couple of modules where the content isn't as helpful or applicable.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)

Plenty. I have regularly played 5 a side football with colleagues after work. I am a member of the gym on site and go routinely. There are loads of other things to get involved in such as drive in movie nights, coding clubs to name a couple.

Would you recommend AstraZeneca to a friend?
Yes
Why?
The work is so rewarding knowing that you are making a difference to a patients life. The values of the company are a big part of the culture and making sure the environment is inclusive and people are doing the right thing. The work is challenging but there is so much support around and great people that you can learn huge amounts from.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to AstraZeneca?
Be yourself. Make your personality shine through in the online application and interview. Employers want to get to know you so don't shy away from telling them your hobbies and what sort of person you are. Work experience is really helpful too, if possible.
