Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
4/5
I install fibre lines to businesses in and around London.
This includes installing equipment, running cables and building joints.
I go to different customers everyday, one day I might be in the Shard, the next I am in the basement of shop in Waterloo. Everyday is different.
I work closely with another Engineer and mainly communicate with my managers on a daily basis.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
3/5
I enjoy learning on the job, after the initial training period there is a lot of learning on the job. The written side of the training is difficult, but you are supported by your NVQ assessor a lot. The initial training was residential, engaging and interesting. You feel part of community

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
4/5
I have learnt a lot about heath and safety, developed my confidence and contributed to encouraging other females to consider engineering as a career option. I have had the opportunity to learn about the physics behind fibre broadband. Through engineering I have developed on my problem solving and reasoning skills.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
3/5
I had days off booked in advance specifically for study to help with the study work. On these study days you are in groups of approx. 8 people and the NVQ assessor helps you with any questions you have. These are spent at home if in lockdown, otherwise you see your assessor in person.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
3/5
We have an app called workplace where there are groups focused on providing support for apprentices. Management in the field do support where they can to help assist you to get evidence to support your written work with photos etc. however, you will need to have basic IT skills for example be able to use Microsoft word and windows PC.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
2/5
Unsure of who my training provider is
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
4/5
It was good to feel supported in the first year of my career instead of being thrown completely in at the deep end. If you are someone who learns quickly however, there is good scope for you to be able to shine.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
3/5
Before covid there were Christmas parties and team meetings. There are different networks you can join such as the gender equality network. I have not heard of any sports teams.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend BT Group to a friend?
Yes
Why?
It has provided me with an opportunity to start engineering having come from a different career path totally and I will be forever grateful for that opportunity.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to BT Group?
In the interviews let your personality shine through, don't be scared to stand out or have a sense of humour. It helps if you have examples of when you've dealt well with high pressure situations and consider what you like to do outside of work. Research into the company a bit, know the difference between the copper and fibre network if you want to stand out.
