Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
Similar requirements to that of a Strategy& associate - assisting with development of decks, data modelling and excel, researching and writing content for projects, and generally participating in the project at meetings, huddles, etc.
Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
I was given a lot of responsibility in terms of being responsible for large sections of the deliverables, data modelling, etc - I also had the opportunity to present to clients which was really valuable. However, I think this can be quite dependent on the project, general attitude of the team and managers, and your abilities as an intern.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
I have definitely learned a lot in terms of technical skills in powerpoint, excel, google suite and have also had a lot of exposure to how consultants approach problems and structure their problem solving skills. Depending on the project there was also a lot of opportunity to participate in team discussions and client meetings which was great in terms of general exposure to what consulting would be like as a career.

Support and Guidance

How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
You get given a career coach and informal associate buddy which is really great for helping you manage any issues and meet your goals. There is a really welcoming workplace culture and I certainly felt that if I was ever having issues I had someone to go to, but I think in terms of associates and managers proactively looking after interns and giving them appropriate work to do this can vary a bit across the firm.

Company Culture

What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
It was great - working hours are much more reasonable than many other consulting firms but at the same time the people are sociable and will organise events like dinners and drinks etc. Larger projects especially made a particular effort to welcome interns and this makes such a difference in networking and general integration within the firm.

Overall Experience

To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?
I really think this is one of the best summer internships available - it pays well, working hours are (relatively) reasonable and your weekends are respected, there is a good mix between office and home working (this year at least, but I suspect it will continue), the people are lovely and the work is interesting. Training is relatively minimal compared to some other internships I've heard about but if you are happy to work independently and actively seek out development opportunities then you will really thrive here.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend PwC to a friend?
Yes
What advice would you give to others applying to PwC
Obviously case interview prep is quite standard across firms, I would say focus on that and also particularly learn to read graphs, try and read lots about how S& approaches problem solving and just generally keep up to date with market trends (6 weeks of reading the FT will really help). They care more about your attitude and general business acumen and exposure moreso than being unbelievably qualified or academic, so don't stress too much in the interview about proving yourself!
