Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
4/5
Delivering, fixing and fault finding in the FTTP- fibre to the prem network. Installing internet and voip service to customers via the Overhead or Underground network. Interacting with customers, fellow engineers, senior engineers and the control, faults and provisions team. Resolving issues involving blocked ducts, overhead saftey issues and submitteing them to be fixed
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
4/5
Its very hands on, you learn more as you work and 'get out in the feild' being able to contact memebers of your team for help and advise is the est part of the role as eveyone is there to help eachother. I enjoy being out and in different environments every day is different

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
4/5
Learnt a lot of new skills, provded 5 weeks training in the yarnfeild training site learning the different types of network cables, how to install fibre into the property, getting the dropwire up and across to the property safley, acessing the underground network and how to do that safley and correctly. testing and fault finding, splicing fibre together to prvide the service to the customer

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
2/5
I think it could be better organised in terms of new recruits and at the begining it felt like you was left to 'fend for yourself' I wasn't given a name or number who i could call if i had any issues or questions so felt quite isolated in an area that i was brand new in
How much support do you receive from your employer?
4/5
I now receive great support as there has been a reorg within the company and new managers have come in place. This has allowed me to have a contact i can call or email to ask any questions and have guidance given with any issues, If only this was set in place from the start!
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
4/5
I didn't hear anything about the apprentiship side of things for a while after being out in the field so i think more communication with that from the begining would be helpful for people. My tutor knows what they are talking about and its good to know they have been out in the field like yourself
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
3/5
I think the main way of learning how to perform the job correctly and safley is by being out with fellow engineers who do the job every day, I learn ore by watching and doing the tasks, hands on. So more time spent buddying and being out in the field with other engineers will help trainees gain more confidence and grow more
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
3/5
I am unsure of any sport or socail activites but that may be because I have joined during covid these might be in place but have been stopped before i joined. I know that there are various networks within the workplace platform that i have joined which share information on various different matters

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend BT Group to a friend?
Yes
Why?
If they enjoy being outside, problem solving, helping people and doing somthing different everyday i would recommend this job to them. It is hard at the begining as a lot of information is being put in your face but once the intial 2 months are out the way and you go out on your own your confidence grows, knowing you have to support of other engineers in your team helps a lot!
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to BT Group?
Just be your self, safety is a high priority in the company, always have a safety first mindset when answering questions. Do some reaserch on Openreach and when it distanced away from BT, the main network is still copper and will be for the next 10-15 years so if joining the fibre side dont forget about the copper
