Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
3/5
I work on testing different applications, dashboards and plugins, with the goal being to automate as many processes/test scripts as possible. I also have to regularly give updates to the team, get information from team members to be able to test to a higher level - i.e. asking what they did in similar circumstances.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
4/5
I think it is great that I can go to university and meet new people both inside and outside of Barclays, all of the lecturers are very approachable and do not mind giving help. Also, everyone at Barclays is very welcoming and wants you to develop by asking questions - it is very inclusive and friendly.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
4/5
Definitely, since being in this role at Barclays I have developed my communication skills - even if it has been entirely virtual! I would say I have also learnt from scratch how to program using Java and how to create test cases, as it is essential for the role that I have.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
3/5
The programme that I am on is well structured as each year there is Barclays' apprentice objectives which to some extent link to university course, which allows for personal growth. However, I think it would be better organised if LMs of apprentices were trained/informed of how the courses will work.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
4/5
From Barclays there is a wealth of support for the apprenticeship, I can get this from my talent coach, which we have 121 meetings with every couple of months or monthly cohort meetings - but they are happy to help if you send them a message outside of these calls. However, there is an understanding from LMs for the course but not necessarily support.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
4/5
There is most definitely a lot of support available from Manchester Metropolitan, for instance after lectures you can message/email lecturers for 121 support. There has also been question sessions, Q&A forums. There is also skills coaches at MMU, they host termly 121 meetings and are willing to help with any concerns.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
4/5
I would say that so far 1/3 of the units has actually directly linked to my job. However, I know that the business unit has allowed me to further understand the company and given my skills that I will use day-to-day. To an extent, the top grades that I have been achieving has motivated me and increased my confidence to perform better.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
4/5
Yes, there is a host of activities available (pre/post-covid), I have already lead a virtual Citizenship session at my old high school. I am aware that there are multiple sports team for nearly every sport. Recently, we have engaged in virtual coffee morning to meet with members of other teams.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend Barclays to a friend?
Yes
Why?
Barclays has a very friendly and supportive feel about it, I can go to anyone about anything. Work is very often collaborative but the company allows you to thrive and develop as an individual too. It is also clear that Barclays want you to grow and reach the top corporate grades.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Barclays?
Be yourself and be confident. Don't act like someone you're not, you need to feel comfortable in your job. Ensure that what you are applying for you can see yourself doing in the near and long-term, however it is still important that you will feel challenged and get a sense of satisfaction.
