Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
4/5
Our daily tasks include constructing and learning about electrical installations and electrical theory. This includes creating containment systems out of trunking, tray and conduit, learning how to wire up circuits, fault finding and correct testing of circuits and installations. We also learn and do the paper work that would be required to be completed when in industry placements.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
4/5
I enjoy my apprenticeship a lot, there is a lot of support within the apprenticeship academy, instructors are always there if you are ever confused and will talk through it all until you know it but also a lot of support if you need help outside of your work as well for mental health and pastoral.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
4/5
I have learnt a lot of construction and theory while doing this apprenticeship such as cable calculations, bending and threading conduit, complex runs of cable trunking and tray, how to do wiring diagrams and how to wire correctly, inspections and testing, isolation, ohm's law and understanding regulations and rules

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
4/5
The apprenticeship is well organised, with clear tasks and deadline set early on and transparency on what is expected by you by the end of your apprenticeship. They deliver a lot of training and lessons while you are doing your apprenticeship and always help you if you ever need it.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
4/5
The employer gives a lot of support throughout your apprenticeship not just for your work but also for mental health, physical health and learning disabilities. There is always someone who can listen to you if you are struggling inside or outside of work and they make sure that everyone knows there is always someone to turn to.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
4/5
The training provider gives a lot of support when working towards your qualifications. The overall attitude and feeling is that they care about you and want to help you gain you qualification, they will put as much help and time into you to succeed as long as you also put effort and time into it.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
4/5
the apprenticeship we are has helped us perform a lot better in our role, everything we learn in theory we put into physical practice through tasks and projects. Everything we learn through our qualification helps us be prepared for our job role when we go onto site afterwards and makes us more confident.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
4/5
Through our apprenticeship we can and encourage to join a number of professional institutions such as IET and NI as well as WISE. We also have a apprentice run association that runs events and activities for apprentices outside of work. We also have a social club that we can join.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend AWE to a friend?
Yes
Why?
AWE have been doing apprenticeships for over 75 years and are well structured with great support from your instructors as well your colleagues. They care a lot about you as an individual rather than you just being an number and provide you training that is very closely related to industry and jobs on site.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to AWE?
The application and interviews can take a long time but are worth it in the end. They care more about you and a person and your mind set than school grade and academia abilities, so even if you weren't the best at school they won't care. Just apply.
