Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
4/5
As a fabricator in a shipyard my role is to fabricate, repair, install or remove various metal components onboard warships and submarines for our customer the Royal Navy
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
3/5
I enjoy the versatility of the work I do on a day to day basis. However I do not as much enjoy the college side of the apprenticeship

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
4/5
All skills I have learnt are completely new as I had no prior experience. These are all trade related skills on the tools

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
4/5
The apprentice lasts 4 years, I’d say the organisation is pretty good minus some poor organisation/ communication from time to time mainly from the college side of it
How much support do you receive from your employer?
5/5
Babcock provide a good amount of support if needed
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
2/5
Not a huge deal in fairness. Depending on who you go to for support, some lecturers at the college will go out their way to support you whereas others are not as concerned
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
2/5
I feel that the theory we learn in college is important due to needing to have strong knowledge on the trade. We do a stupid amount of maths which I think is completely unnecessary as I’ve never needed it in work. The practical work is not relevant either
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
1/5
Not that I am aware of no!

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend Babcock International Group to a friend?
Yes
Why?
The work can be exciting and challenging , you can learn on the job so no experience required, and the rate of pay is really good for apprentices
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Babcock International Group?
Make sure you read up on the trade you are applying for us you can’t change once your in, so ensure you will enjoy it! Also be prepared for 3 tough years balancing college work and NVQ work with your normal work life. It’s worth it afterwards though
