Overview of Role
Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:

For my job i machine in a workshop using various machines such as lathes, milling machines and grinders. I also use various hand tools such as saws, files and scribers. I also do programming on CNC mills and lathes to make a range of different components out of various materials.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?

I really enjoy my apprenticeship. It has allowed me to learn completely new skills which i have never done before and has opened a lot of doorways for future careers. It has also allowed me to have training from people who have a lot of experience in this field of work.
Skills Development
Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?

I have learnt many new skills since starting my apprenticeship. This includes how to safely operate manual mills and lathes safely and use various techniques to make various jobs. I have also learnt how to use softwares such as shopmill and shopturn to create components on CNC machines to tight tolerances.
Structure and Support
How well organised/structured is your programme?

The program is well structured. You start off learning a lot of health and safety things to ensure you can work safely in your workplace. You then are trained on how to do basic hand fitting activities and machining activities, and with more experience you start to get more challenging workpieces.
How much support do you receive from your employer?

There is a lot of support available from your employer. This is not only work specific support. There is also a lot of support when it comes to more personal things such as mental health challenges and personal problems. I always feel like there is sup[port available in multiple aspects of my worklife.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?

There is a lot of support from training providers. When I am stuck there is always help available and trainers are always happy to help. There is also a lot of help and support when working through my written work to complete my qualification whether this be specific advice on questions or more general.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?

My qualification through my training provider has hugely helped me perform better in my role. My time in the skills academy helped me develop skills which I never knew before. This has helped me perform better in my placements as it has given me a good foundation to start with on placament.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)

There are some extra curricular activities available to employees, however not so much in recent times due to covid. There is the opportunity yo go to Mach 2022 which I am attending which will be great to gain some more knowledge on the engineering and machining industry outside of work too.

Why?
I would recommend AWE to a friend because there is a great range of careers available within the company, with experienced and skilled people providing training in the dedicated fields of work. Workers are also paid fairly and there is a good amount of holiday for employees, especially with the 9 day fortnight.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to AWE?
I would tell people to do some research into the company and their field of work before they apply and their interviews, to ensure the have picked the right apprenticeship for them. Write some notes before your assessment and interview days so you are prepared and can have the best interview that you can.
