Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:

On a day to day basis I am leading an engineering project, delivering an updated solution to a customer. This involves managing resource and schedule to cost, providing forecasts to the project controllers with estimates as to how much work is left, and updating planning documentation as appropriate. I also lead educational strategy for site, meaning I coordinate and mentor volunteers through running and attending their events

To what extent do you enjoy your programme?

The culture of the business is a great place to work, everybody helps everyone else out, there are no silly questions, and development is always prioritised. The teams I have worked with have always made me feel welcomed and have pushed me to achieve more.
The scheme exceeds my expectations and I have enjoyed every moment of it, I especially enjoy the outreach opportunities I have

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?

I have gained an engineering degree, which has developed my ability to work on electronic hardware, develop software, and create diverse specifications for engineering projects. I have also developed my personal skills, including presenting, networking, time management and communication with people of numerous different backgrounds. I also have the chance to mentor other people through gaining these skills

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?

Induction to GE is performed by HR and we are treated like members of staff immediately. Training is provided for everything we do to ensure we are kept safe whilst completing our work.
We have meeting with our training coordinator every 12 weeks to ensure that we are keeping on top of and achieving commitments as required.

How much support do you receive from your employer?

Support is always available to us whenever we need it. From HR support with personal matters, to career development and academic studies, all we need to do is ask for it. Nearly everybody is happy to help with questions and provide guidance with issues, or point us in the right direction for help.

How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?

Support is available on all fronts, all we need to do is ask for it.
Depending on the year we are in, support is provided for different tasks, for example, I am currently working towards my end point assessment and I am being supported through that process by my training advisor.

How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?

I have used all aspects of my degree whilst working as an engineer, it is useful to be able to link up what I do on one day and immediately use it the following day in the office. I feel I have learnt more doing it this way than I would have done going to uni full time.

Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)

We are accredited through the IET so I have the opportunity to attending these professional networking events, however, social activities and sports teams are lacking on site. There is an opportunity to make one, but there are not many to get immediately involved in. If there was, I would jump at the opportunity

Would you recommend GE Aerospace to a friend?

Yes

Why?

GE Aviation promotes a supporting and caring environment for all employees, we are driven to succeed and supported when we don't feel like we are. It is a fun place to work, and the projects we work on are huge real world engineering problems, so looking up and seeing an aircraft which you have worked on flying above is a great feeling

What tips or advice would you give to others applying to GE Aerospace?

Be honest, be confident and be yourself.
If you can get engineering experience before hand then do, but if not, demonstrate a willingness to learn and adapt to different situations.
Look at yourself and think about what you can bring to the scheme, rather than just what you can get out of it
