Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.

Was tasked with completing several projects from front-end web design to producing queries with SQL that outputted data that could then be presented using a Google framework called Data Studio. Using Agile methodology, the average day involved a morning meeting to discuss aims and blocks to our work. Then we would work within our teams and split the work into sub-tasks amongst ourselves for that day. each task involved different technical skills, but most were orientated around coding.

Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?

Yes we were responsible for several things, the first being dividing each task into separate sub-tasks and allocating them to those with the best skill set for that problem. We were also responsible for creating a presentation to different stakeholders for the work we had done in order to receive constructive feedback on how we could improve the work we had done. It was also our responsibility to identify the different problems that were preventing us from progressing and highlighting these blocks with our manager.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?

I have developed my coding skills hugely, as I have now been introduced to new coding languages like SQL and Javascript, as well as how CSS and HTML form the front-end design. i have developed my presentation skills as we had a presentation every Friday displaying what we have achieved by the end of each week. I have improved my communication, collaboration and organisational skills as most days were filled with virtual calls with different departments/people.

Support and Guidance

How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?

There was a huge amount of support given by our two line managers, who answered all of our questions promptly and gave very informative answers. Due to the team dynamic communicating with the other interns was made easy. We were also given a graduate mentor to help guide us and offer any advice on problems we faced both within the internship and outside. Other individuals outside the internship also offered their help when asked which was also extremely helpful.

Company Culture

What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?

There were multiple fun activities throughout the internship. Every few weeks members of the department we worked in would host quizzes/ games which was a nice break from work. The company culture was very much collaboration orientated and that allowed for others to offer their help if needed. There were also initiatives for volunteering and fundraising for a mental health charity which involved interns from different service lines which was allowed for the development of relations with others outside of our immediate department.

Overall Experience

To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?

The work was hard as most the tasks involved skills that I did not possess at the time, but that added to the reward of completing the task, as not only has the solutions been obtained but my skills have increased as well. One of the most enjoyable experiences was making new friends and connections within the teams we worked in, which surpassed my expectations of working by myself on a project without much guidance.

Would you recommend HSBC to a friend?

Yes

What advice would you give to others applying to HSBC

First I would say know the industry / area you are applying for well, as that is what the main interview questions will focus on. I would then advice you research the company you are applying for well, as why you picked that company will also be a main focus. For any recorded videos, make sure you speak clearly and at a regular pace whilst also maintaining eye contact with the camera. For the assessment centre, research in advance areas you are interested in that relate to the roll that you have applied for. Also don't try to be someone you aren't and try to bluff through the questions, be honest if you aren't sure about an answer.
