Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:

I am responsible for the collection and collation of HR information which is used to support the business in producing monthly reports for business reviews. I am also responsible for supporting on change projects both within the sector and group, supporting with additional ad-hoc tasks as and when I am required.

To what extent do you enjoy your programme?

I enjoy the programme that I'm on, it has been challenging whilst completing it in a virtual environment as I miss the social interaction of being in the room with people, and it makes it easier to communicate with people being able to see them and bounce off their body language.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?

I don't feel I have developed any new skills, but I have certainly developed existing skills. The reason for not developing new skills is due to having recently completed a similar course that looks to develop business skills which has been covered again in this programme, although there is academic models and principles which are new to me that I have picked up.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?

There is a set structure with regards to the MSc / academic side of things, although I feel that the portfolio and apprenticeship side of the programme has been drip fed to us, leading to some confusion, with a lack of consistent messaging that has been given to each member of the cohort.

How much support do you receive from your employer?

I get as much support as I need from my employer, across all the roles that I have had whilst I've been on the programme. It can be challenging to managing fitting in 20% of my work week to attribute to the programme, but I have an open communication channel with my line manager to help manage this.

How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?

There is sufficient support from the training provider, with each module leader being very supportive and open to contact with queries if required. The apprentice tutor we are assigned perhaps can be a little difficult to get hold of at times which means I can't move along as I would like to whilst waiting for feedback.

How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?

It has given me a broader scope and understanding of the wider impact of challenges that can face a business, which means that I am now starting to look at day to day or routine tasks through a wider lens to understand how it may impact the wider picture for the business.

Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)

Usually there would be various networking sessions to get involved with, or sports activities organised locally depending on where you were based, but the recent pandemic has meant that these opportunities have been reduced. Although with restrictions lifting I'm hoping to be able to get involved with more of these activities as they start up again.

Would you recommend Babcock International Group to a friend?

Yes

Why?

I think it's a company that for the right people, can offer a range of opportunities across different streams of business for operations that are critical to providing defence and life saving services. I have also found Babcock to be very supportive with my personal development which encourages me to work hard and return the favour they have paid me.

What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Babcock International Group?

I would advise anyone that is applying to Babcock to make sure they have done their research about Babcock's operations to understand whether it's a company that they want to work for. Also to highlight what unique experiences you have that you can bring to Babcock as this is what will set you apart in interviews.
