Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:

As an Inspire Student Ambassador, I am involved with careers fairs and employability events, inspiring other students and young people to consider a role within British Airways. As well as careers fairs, I also hold presentations to local schools/universities and attend workshops on how to improve my own employability skills, as well as presenting the company at different events (awards ceremonies, Pilot Careers Live etc.)
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?

I thoroughly enjoy my programme. Not only does this programme enable me to develop my personal skills, but my competency skills as well. It has also allowed me to meet people with a similar mindset as me, as well as surround myself within the career environment I would like to be in, in the future.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?

I’ve greatly improved many skills, in particular; my confidence, employability and networking skills. I started this programme in 2017, being quite shy and not having a lot of leadership skills. 4 years later, I am far more confident and feel I have great networking skills- having used LinkedIn a lot through the programme. I think this is demonstrated by the fact I have recently accepted a place at a commercial pilot school- something I am not sure I would have had the skills for without British Airways.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?

This programmes is very well organised. We get sent an email at the beginning of each month with all the events coming up that we can volunteer to do. We are then sent any resources we may need to complete this in plenty of time. We also have a WhatsApp chat where we can organise a vents with the others.
How much support do you receive from your employer?

My employer is on call whenever I need her. I have multiple ways of contacting her, including via email and WhatsApp. She is always very quick to respond to any queries I have and goes out of her way to help me- including helping me with interview preparation for future roles.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?

I am given all the support I could need. As previously mentioned, my employer is on hand whenever I need her. She is very organised with my qualifications, assisting in any way possible to ensure I have the best experience I can. She is always looking to help me improve and in my opinion goes above and beyond!
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?

My training provider hold skills sessions, such as a recent employability session, to help me improve my skills and abilities. Before any of my qualifications, I am thoroughly trained and given tips on how I can get the best out of my experience. I couldn’t praise my employer enough!
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)

We have plenty opportunities to get involved in extra curricular activities. As a group, we do many different charity events, such as a recent sponsored virtual walk, and previously we have abseilled the AccellorMittal tower in the Olympic park. These are all a great way to meet other people with a similar mindset to me!

Why?
British Airways are a very friendly company with a ‘people first’ point of view. They care about all their employees, and do all they can to ensure the best possible outcome and value of life for all employees. Although they are a big company, there is still a sense of individuality and I feel very happy being there.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to British Airways?
It’s very important to be yourself! British Airways like individuals so it’s important being yourself. I think it’s also important to have a passion to learn and develop and be looking to improve yourself- whether this is educational or personal. It’s important to be open and honest as well.
