Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
4/5
Being a pole tester involves health and safety. It is my role to ensure the poles I test are safe for our engineers and the public. I pick up my day to day work from an yearly stack of poles and I decide how and when to test them. Work is dynamic and it is happening always outside in open air
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
5/5
I enjoyed the programme a lot. Lots of useful information as well as information which probably I won't use, but doesn't matter it is useful to be prepared to anything the job involves. The programme made aware about all the resources available to be used within the job and company such as EAP and Security team

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
5/5
There are many skills I managed to apprehend, most of them in regards to safety but also how to self manage myself and be part of a team. I learned how to provide and make the work place safe on and around poles and network related plants. Safety in Openreach is the main guideline

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
5/5
I was impressed by the availability and the structure of the apprenticeship team. Derek Breen, my assessor, provided me with all the support I was needing towards my apprenticeship completion and further than that he acted as mentor to me, providing me useful tips and tricks from his engineer experience. All the programme had a clear and simple structure, easy to go through
How much support do you receive from your employer?
5/5
Openreach has provided me more that just support. The company has provided me knowledge from years of experience and skills which took me to be an independent engineer, working and managing all by myself. Anytime I need, my manger is only one call away, as well as like the rest of the team which shared gladly their knowledge with me.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
5/5
BT has provided me with a complete training and apprenticeship, but the progress doesn't stop here. BT/Openreach, both of them are providing me with new training and CBT required for my progression and also learning to be an advanced engineer and succeed into building up my career and experience.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
5/5
The apprenticeship and the training have provided me essential skill for getting qualified into being an Openreach engineer and to be able to provide service to one of the biggest UK national network company. It teached years of experience and showed me how a world leading company it's building their network
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
5/5
Openreach offers the possibility to get involved in many activities along with my colleagues. Obviously, due to the pandemic circumstances, some of these activities are suspended. The company values our health and safety and it offered alternatives and solutions to the lack of social contact. Also, Openreach allows us days of volunteering where we also get paid for doing this.

What tips or advice would you give to others applying to BT Group?
Always be sincere. Openreach doesn't like and it doesn't tolerate false truth. Openreach it's serious company and even if you are not prepared, the company will provide you all the training necessary in order to be the engineer you need to be. Just be yourself and Openreach will give the treat you deserve
