Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:

As a Quantity Surveyor I make sure WHL track and monitor financial aspects of a project in an attempt to maximise profit. This role involves vaulting and tracking sub contractors work as well as pricing work to be submitted to the client for payment.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?

The programme is superb. Very enjoyable as the mix of university learning and WHL is constantly fresh. Huge amounts of support by work company makes work a nice environment. This support also helps in my performance which also has a positive effect on enjoyment.

I believe the structure is great as it allows you to find a balance with your work and your degree - allowing you to successfully perform well in both areas without feeling overwhelmed.
How much support do you receive from your employer?

Employer in particular provides great support with both the quantity surveying role and with university. Superb support.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?

It is a shame that the support is not as good as my employer. The University’s support system is poor and it sometimes feels like the University makes it very difficult to fulfil your potential.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?

I believe you learn a lot more through your role than through your qualification. Learning in your role is a lot more relevant and more practical which is important for a QS.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)

Yes, many social activities and networking events. Annual sports activities also.

Why?
William Hare have restlessly strives to improve their apprenticeship scheme which has resulted in a well structured and well supported scheme. I’ve learnt so much and feel well prepared to have a successful career in the construction industry. The support and the confidence the employer has allows you to really test yourself with the great exposure to the different aspects of a QS role.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to William Hare?
Utilise your peers as the staff at William Hare have both great experience and knowledge - always ask the “why?” of a task you have been asked to do to develop your knowledge.
