Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:

I support my colleagues with the laboratory characterisation of their project work. This involves using a combination of different instruments, such as the Optical Microscopy/ G3 Morphology/ Scanning Electron Microscopy and X-Ray Powder Diffraction. I use these to assess that the crystals grown, are the “right particle”. This includes looking for the correct form, purity, size and shape etc. l regularly run the crystallisation and isolation process of a material as well as solubility experiments.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?

I thoroughly enjoy my vocational work. I get on very well with all of my colleagues and each day is always interesting. I love to see how much I am improving and helping other, the feedback I receive is always positive and that really motivates me to do well. Sometimes I struggle with my Uni work which disheartens me as I really want to excel in my apprenticeship, my educational provider is very supportive (as are my employer) so this helps me to do better.

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?

I have learnt countless new skills since starting my apprenticeship...to many to name. I have learnt workplace skills, personal skills, soft skills as well as developing and expanding ALL of my existing skills. My independence and confidence are the biggest development since starting. I have also learnt so many practical Lab skills and 6 specialised techniques.
Structure and Support
How well organised/structured is your programme?

I like the structure and the flexibility of the programme however it is pretty limited and specialised. Although I am learning a Chemistry degree, it is hard for my workplace to provide me with all aspects of chemistry while providing me with a role as each role is pretty specialist. My employer do try their best to expose me to as much variation as possible and I can seek change wherever I need.

How much support do you receive from your employer?

Whenever I have needed support in any area, my employer has always been able to provide it. Whether it be educational, emotional, physical or role-related support; the resources available are outstanding.
I do not need to ask for support directly, the resources available for me to access my self are great and I have regular informal reviews as well as formal reviews to ensure I have enough support.

How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?

My training provider has always provided the needed support when I have asked for it. Any help I have asked for or issues I have had have always been more or less resolved...albeit sometimes slowly.
The training provider isn't always the most efficient at actively advertising their support system but they are there is and when needed.

How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?

Although the degree I study is relative to the industry I work in, the specialist area requires a higher level of context that I receive from my employer.
The training provider gives a good broad understanding on the subject area which supports some aspects of my day to day role as well as generic varied chemistry.
There are some Units that are specific to the apprenticeship and the workplace which are really helpful.

Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)

I am part of a Social and Cultural group who advertise and encourage engagement within the department. We regularly host meetings and small social events in the office to promote the working culture and community.
I used to regularly attend weekly/ monthly after work social events and "Pub Lunch"s to broaden my network of colleagues.
I am SIP ambassador where i represent the industry and my company to promote apprenticeships.

AstraZeneca is an amazing place to work where I always feel welcomed and valued by everyone. I have learnt so much in such a short amount of time and I am always recognised for my hard work which really motivated me to do even better.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to AstraZeneca?
Be yourself, AstraZeneca looks for individuality and character. AZ look for people who know what they want and are passionate about achieving.
