Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
4/5
Opening the pub and closing the pub. Running small teams. Staff training. Conflict resolution between customers. Setting the pub up for a day of trade. Stock counting. Managing bookings. Personal license holder. Communicating with staff, delivery drivers, customers and other external bodies via phone email and face to face to ensure a smooth running of the business.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
3/5
I did enjoy the programme although I was lead to believe I would be doing a Level 3 instead of a Level 2. Whilst this isn’t the end of the world it did somewhat feel as if this is for retention purposes to keep learners on as I was bombarded with other courses long before I was due to finish. I was also signed up to the wrong programme at the start.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
4/5
I have learned how to communicate better with customers and I understand various health and safety laws and legislations a lot better. I know how to manage my time more in order to get the most out of a working day. I learned how to be more confident in my ability as well.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
3/5
It’s great as I know where I’m up to eat month. Each module is very self explanatory and you’re able to learn at your own pace. The only thing I do believe needs more work was the project as I wasn’t allowed to ask my trainer for help and I wasn’t happy with my results although I understand why.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
3/5
I didn’t feel like I needed a lot of support at the start. However during the end when I needed assistance with my project it was difficult to get this. This was due to other external factors due to COVID/staffing issues so I felt a bit left in the dark and had to complete it myself with minimum help.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
4/5
A lot. My trainer was external supportive and always made me feel comfortable in what I was doing. He was always in hand when I needed him and he was absolutely incredible. There were a few times where I didn’t feel as if I did enough but he always assured me I did.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
3/5
As it was a Level 2 course a lot of the things I was learning were things I already knew and was doing. This put me at an advantage. I think if I was to do the Level 3 like I was meant to I’d have felt a lot more challenged and like I wasn’t just boxing ticking things I already knew.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
4/5
There are not as far as I am aware. But this is not something that I am particularly interested in as I don’t do well in organised activities such as sporting events. But I would like to see maybe more profession networking events, especially between other pubs and learners.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend Mitchells and Butlers to a friend?
Yes
Why?
I feel supported by M&B and I know where I stand. Sometimes the training on MABLE feels a bit excessive but i understand why it’s necessary. It depends on the day sometimes I feel overworked and taken advantage of and then sometimes I don’t feel as if I’m being pushed enough.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Mitchells and Butlers?
Be yourself and just enjoy the process. Whilst it can be hard there are a lot of benefits. You don’t just feel like another person you do actually feel as if managers and those higher than your managers know you on a personal level which is nice. You feel valued as an employee.
