Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:

Completing Questions on Microsoft word about engineering and business related topics called knowledge questions, completing maintenance activities alongside trained maintenance engineers, writing up jobs I have completed. Using hand tools to repair and maintain machinery that has failed to meet the business specifications. Learning new skills as often as I can to continue to grow my development. Our team communicates to ensure we are all on track and all ok. I attend college every Wednesday to learn theory work relating to engineering.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?

I enjoy doing practical work and learning new skills. I really enjoy to take the new skills I learn and build on them to become competent, confident and eventually qualified. I enjoy talking to the people I work with in and outside of work. I enjoy the atmosphere of the working day, and how much work I have to do as it builds my skillset quickly. I enjoy being taught something that I am eager to learn about.

How well organised/structured is your programme?

I attend college every week from home and follow a timetable which tells me what teacher I need to be in a call with at what time. College is finishing this year, and we still have a lot of work that needs to be done, so college feels rushed. The other 4 days in the week are spent at work, and I am on a 2 shift pattern of mornings and afternoons. when at work, the pace feels good, as we have all of the work we need to do given to us at the start of the year, and its up to us to complete it on time. I have completed a good amount so far, so I aim to keep up and exceed my working habits in the future.
How much support do you receive from your employer?

Whenever I have any question, I research it for myself first and usually find the answer using my initiative. If I cannot find the answer myself, then I can ask my managers for assistance. They always point me to the right email address, phone number or solution. I get reviewed every 4-6 weeks with my manager and someone from the college to ensure that I am making progress and I am up to speed with everything.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?

Derby college is my training provider (I couldn't find it on the page before). I get good support when I ask a question to 2 of my teachers this year, and I receive a clear and informative response about how to resolve my problem. My units in college feel rushed, I can keep up with them but I am aware of people in my group struggling to keep up with the content. I always offer my help and I have taught people in my group how to do the maths parts of any unit, sometimes doing a 1 to 1 session with them for a few weeks before an exam.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?

Some of the units I learn at college directly help me with my role very well, such as the PLC course and the pneumatics and hydraulics course. I work with mechatronic systems that use pneumatics and hydraulics to function, and as I do the practical work at work and the theory at college I am learning quickly. Not every unit and not every student gets to experience doing practical and theory on the same subject in the same week, so I am lucky in getting to do this at my current placement.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)

Before lockdowns, I would go out with friends I have made at work to things such as gigs, restaurants, cinema, gym etc... At the minute I am not aware of any extra curricular activities going on for us, but we all stay in touch over social media, helping each-other get through any issues we have - work related or not. I am aware of extra curricular activities that were going on outside of lockdown, such as sports teams in football. There's not much that is possible to do in our current climate, so I will rate this based on my pre-covid experience

Would you recommend Rolls-Royce to a friend?

Why?
Rolls-Royce is a very good employer. They treat the workforce very well and allow them to expand and build their knowledge to a great level. They have taught me much about safety, efficiency, worker and machine effectiveness and life skills such as financial capability. I would give my employer a 10 out of 10 for the job they are doing to ensure I am taught well and feel supported. They are doing a great job, especially given the current situation with air travel.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Rolls-Royce?
Ensure that you are a safe worker, that has a good attitude to work. Do your work as it comes in if you are free, know how to structure yourself so you can complete more important and urgent jobs at a suitable safe pace before tackling the less urgent tasks. Prioritise safety, then prioritise expanding your knowledge and becoming a more skilled worker. Be honest in all situations and circumstances, it is important to be open so everyone can adapt their work based on your situations. For example if you will be late performing maintenance on a machine, inform the relevant people with as much time as you can so they can figure out a plan to ensure the work gets done in a suitable timescale.
