Overview of Role
Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:

The scheme is comprised of 4 rotational placements, of which the latter two can be chosen by the graduate. Unfortunately COVID-19 meant this was 3 placements, none of which were chosen by us. The work is varied and can involve bid management, administration, contract management, project management, energy trading, risk management, finance, marketing and many others.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?

I do like the company and its mission and the operations are diverse, so there could be a lot of opportunity within it. Unfortunately my cohort were limited by changes to the scheme due to COVID. However, the work can be enjoyable at times and the company has a lot of incentives, wellbeing schemes and events.
Skills Development
Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?

The scheme involved working toward a CMI Level 3 certificate. This involved learning about management styles, communication, project management to relatively low level. I did not find the content challenging or interesting.
On the job I was able to learn VBA and use some technical knowledge. But the lack of a defined role and a time limit of 6 months it is difficult to develop skills unless you have a very clear preferred career path.

How well organised/structured is your programme?

Reasonably well organised. As mentioned previously, 4 rotational placements with opportunity to get experience where grad chooses in final two. Talent team are helpful and communicate well and often.
How much support do you receive from your employer?

A good amount, as comes with a large company. Lots of wellbeing events/support, training (or budget for training), career development.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?

Regular 12 month meeting, however RedSky coach available in the day and prompt to respond. Very happy to help.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?

Very little. The vague and exoteric approach is relevant to those interested a purely people-managing role but not for myself.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)

Yes, often social events, however the spread of grads across the country means not much opportunity for socialising, especially with COVID 19.

Would you recommend Equans UK & Ireland to a friend?
Yes
Why?
The company is a force for positive change in the world and is aiming to lead the carbon transition. There are lots of diverse sectors and operations and leadership does seem to care for employees across the UK.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Equans UK & Ireland?
Have an interest in zero-carbon activities/programs. Be open to new experiences but having a defined career path in mind will help.
