Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
5/5
Mechanical aircraft fitter. Manufacturing, fitting, repairing mechanical components for a range of helicopters. Working on the aircraft in a hanger or workshop. Studying at college also.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
5/5
I love it, it's very interesting and the new skills I have gained are very fulfilling. I just wish there were more hours in the day.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
5/5
Yes, learnt skills in sheet metal work, aircraft systems and general mechanics, developing the skills at work. Studying at college learning a whole range of topics including materials, engines, transmissions, Aerodynamics and theory of flight.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
5/5
Very well organised, the company provides a training manger to guide through each stage of the apprenticeship. They liase with college staff to keep track of our college learning and with work placement management to track on site progress.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
5/5
As much as I need, there are many forms of communication and I am kept in the loop at all times.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
5/5
As much as I need, again there are many forms of communication and all staff members are willing to go out of their way to help me achieve.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
5/5
For the base skills before starting my work placements it was essential. The ongoing theory makes it possible to make decisions in the workplace and read and intepret engineering drawings etc. The practical has given me a chance to develop these skills and gain confidence.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
5/5
There is a whole committee that supports all early years staff (trainees, apprentices, degree students etc). They host and participate in many social and sporting events etc. Currently Covid has halted a lot of these activities but the community of support remains. There are many company schemes to partake in additional to the early years committee.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend Leonardo to a friend?
Yes
Why?
It's an excellent company offering many options throughout my career. The development continues long after my apprenticeship is completed with great progression routes. As an apprentice it is perfect being able to learn on the job and at college whilst earning a respectable salary.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Leonardo?
Work towards it now. If you do not get offered a role at the first attempt, try again. Research the roles and decide which suits you best, there are often events held for information and guidance - work hard and achieve your goal. You will be blessed with an amazing career.
