Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:

My role involves planning, organising and managing day-to-day activities on site. This includes preparing task briefings, permits and other relevant documentation required to complete a task. My role also involves checking the quality of works produced on site, for example through signing off quality assurance check sheets.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?

The apprenticeship programme has been very challenging but also very rewarding. There can be a lot of pressure when on site at times but you always learn from your mistakes.
Skills Development
Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?

I have learnt how to use a digital level, total station, 3D laser scanner, 3D camera, a rebar scanner, a CAT and Genny scanner and various other equipment used on a construction site. I have also developed planning and leadership skills.
Structure and Support
How well organised/structured is your programme?

The start of the apprenticeship was quite unorganised as I found that Skanska just plonked you on a site and didn't give you any guidance. I had never been on a construction site before so for me it was very daunting.
How much support do you receive from your employer?

I feel that due to Skanska being such a large company that do not offer a lot individual support and it was hard to find someone to converse with at the start of the programme when I didn't know anyone within the company.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?

Skanska are great for any training you wish to complete. I have completed a number of training qualifications with Skanska, including a level 3 extended BTEC and I am currently working towards a Beng in Civils.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?

The qualification you receive at the end of the apprenticeship programme will give you a basic knowledge of construction and the different elements such as different legislation etc. I found that I learnt a lot more when I was on site and learning hands on.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)

There is an infrastructure road show event that Skanska puts on every year to discuss current projects and potential future projects. This is a great way to learn more about the company and its achievements.

Why?
Whilst I have been at Skanska I have been on four different projects, completed a level 3 extended diploma in construction and a level 3 NVQ. Skanska are one of the best companies for personal development in the construction industry.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Skanska?
I would definitely choose an apprenticeship with Skanska over going to uni. I have learnt so much by being on site and learning on the job. I would advise applicants to be proactive from the start and always show interest to learn.
