As a trainee project Engineer I feel that I am working to the standard expected of me by my fellow peers. Any task that is required of me, I give my full attention & effort in order to make sure that it is to a sufficient standard. On my current project (K1 Knightsbridge), I am getting invloved with the commisissioing process; collaborating with the clients design (Chapmann) & Commissioining team, sub-contractors and commissioing mangers. Relevant test packs with cover sheets need to be in place ready to be signed for when equipment is wintessed on site.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?

I am enjoying learning on the job while also developing my technical knowledge at University. I am mainly learning practical skills while at work (i.e. commissioning) which I wouldn't get as much of an insight if I was doing a degree full time. Furthermore, I am enjoying applying my practical knowledge developed from work into my uni work and have greatly benefited from doing both. Overall, the split of work/uni has greatly benefited my development.

Structure and Support
How well organised/structured is your programme?

When I first started the programme, it was poorly structured. I was only told a year and a half late that I had to do a L4 NVQ, meaning I had 6 months to do a course that is normally given 2 years to complete. Apart from that, the course has been organised in a structured manor and I have had no problems since. I am constantly updated of new courses available and any changes at uni.
How much support do you receive from your employer?

My employer are constantly looking to push and develop me. This includes offering multiple courses throughout the year, and having personal development reports on a yearly basis. Also, my employer expose me to tasks at work which push me and allow me develop. This includes engaging me in meetings and letting me manage Mechanical packages. If I have any issues or concerns, I feel more than comfortable asking my manager for support and guidance on what Ive done wrong.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?

University have been okay at offering support to me when needed. This includes, responding to any queries or concerns I have. My tutors are more than happy to give guidance on work that I've done. There have been the odd occasion where theres been a lack of communication between my uni and employer which has affected my work. I was having problems downloading a software onto my laptop which was needed to do a piece of coursework but no one from either parties gave a way to solve the issue
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?

There are some aspects of what I have learnt through my qualifications that have benefited my performance at work. For example, learning about electrical distribution for a building at uni helped me apply it at work when out on site looking at commissioning electrical pieces of equipment. Some learning resources from uni are not used in my day to day job and have no real benefit on my performance at work. I.e. matrices in maths
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)

We have annual trainee catch-up events which are really beneficial in networking with other trainees. Seeing how everyone else is doing and experiences they've had is great for you to see how your developing and whined down from day to day work. My company also has annual building services events which allow all projects to come together to celebrate the hard work and achievements of everyone in the business. I feel more leisure/ sports events would be great for team-bonding.

Why?
Skanska are great at looking after and supporting apprentices and willingly want you to do well at work and off the job training. Peers are happy to help you and want you to do well in your role. They make you feel part of the team and give you the confidence you need to undertake your role. They also, have key values in place which they follow, making it a comfortable and enjoyable place to work.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Skanska?
Making sure you are aware of there core values (Care for Life, Act Ethically & Transparently, Be Better – Together and Commit to Customers) and how you will apply them if you joined Skanska. Making sure you are fully committed to the role you are applying for as the job can be very demanding but rewarding. making sure you show your personality and skills in interviews/assessment days is key in being successful in the application process.
