Overview of Role
Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:

So my roles is to produce and fabricate sheet metal parts for the jet engines, this role I have only just taken on as I have been in a years training at the LDC so the day to day in the business is to go into the area I am assigned to and learn from the mentors who go through each process with me so I will be able to produce the same thing by myself.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?

I love my programme especially the practicaL as I have always learnt with my hands and for as long as I have know wanted a job where I make things. I think you get a lot of satisfaction in this job compared to an office job because you get to see something you have produced function on a jet engine. The only side of it I struggle with is the theory but by doing revision and working as hard as possible I think I should be all ok

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?

I have learnt loads of new skills the two of my favourite being welding and manipulation of sheet metal which I use the sheet metal aspect in my role and both combined have not only helped me with the role it has also helped me in my hobby which recently was the restoration of a 29 year old classic car. Theses skills can only be learnt by practice and the course at the LDC gave us loads of practice .
Structure and Support
How well organised/structured is your programme?

I think so far it has been quite organised and we always have access to the workshop loading which gets updated frequently so we always know where we should be and what we should be doing. Recently it’s been difficult because of Covid 19 but we have had a brilliant course of online lessons which kept our theory to the standard it needs to be to make sure we continue in a timely manner on our course
How much support do you receive from your employer?

We are supported both mentally and physically by the company if we have any issues they are brought up to our ADLs (apprentice development leaders) they then try to solve these issues for example if we are injured then they will cater for us to return to work to do something that will be easier on the specific injury. We also have ADL meanings every 8 weeks which we get asked what we are doing to keep healthy and happy as well as making sure our progress is going well
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?

We have had a lot of support especially over Covid 19 period. They give us clear briefs that we have to meet and if these are not met they tell us how to improve it as simple as that really I enjoy the theory side as a lot of the instructors are easy going and explain it in a way everyone will understand. I have to say they aren’t happy unless everyone is on board with what is happening.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?

Some of the units we do help a lot especially unit 2 which helps us conduct our role in a safe manner and unit 3,4 and 5 helps us learn about materials and processes that are used to produce products. 4 and 5 give us an insight on business functions and how they stay profitable. The only thing I think could be a bit over kill is maths as the standard is so high and is a lot more than what we would need i our role, this being said I enjoy the challenge and love learning new things so there isn’t much to complain about
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)

At rolls Royce there is a leisure centre even though I haven’t been I have had a look round and it has a lot of facilities and the rugby club is just there I would be interested in joining the rugby club with my fellow colleagues but I have a bad history with injuries

Would you recommend Rolls-Royce to a friend?
Yes
Why?
It lets you grow as not just a person but also helps grow your skill set with hopefully a job lined up at the end which you have been training towards for 3-4 years so there isn’t any surprises if you get the job
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Rolls-Royce?
Just be open minded to every aspect because I went in there only wanting to do welding but in my course we had to produce sheet metal tasks which I liked a lot more than welding which was a surprise to me
