Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
4/5
To produce sheet metal components and assemblies for a variety of engines produced by RR. I get taught the methods oh how to produce the required standard of work by other operators on the factory floor.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
4/5
I enjoy the program I’m on, sometimes it’s frustrating when things don’t turn out how you expect. Sometimes it can be frustrating trying to get the help required as operators are busy. However all in all I enjoy coming to work and learning the new skills.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
4/5
Developed: teamwork, social skills, my own self confidence and problem solving abilities.
I’ve learned: how to use tools in the most effective manner, how sheet metal reacts to different processes and the impacts of working them in particular ways.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
4/5
All the way through the program I’ve had a clear structure and timeline of what needed to happen by when, what courses I was needed on and so on. I am always kept informed of any changes or things that are expected. No complaints
How much support do you receive from your employer?
5/5
When I struggle to complete a job it can be sometimes difficult to get the help as operators are busy, however 9/10 times I’m able to get the help from someone. They help if I have any other needs; well-being and other work related issues. My current ADL/Manager does a good job of keeping in touch of everything.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
3/5
All of it is tracked regularly of the progress being made. We’ve had several issues with our BTEC provider over the last 2 years, which Rolls Royce have had to deal with. We have been a “Guinea pig” group for the company to see what the training is like. It could have been better.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
3/5
The technical knowledge gives me a wider understanding of how my company works business wise and gives a background understanding of how materials react to processes. The practical element of the training also gives me basic training on equipment I may use in the workplace.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
4/5
Rolls are part of the AGA (apprentice and graduates association) which run regular events if you wish to attend. Rolls Royce also have small social groups that play sports like rugby football and cycling.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend Rolls-Royce to a friend?
Yes
Why?
All the way through I’ve been looked after. The reputation the company name has earned is very much lived up to. I would definitely love to work here after my apprenticeship given the chance.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Rolls-Royce?
Be yourself and be honest. They’re not only looking for qualified people but people who gel with their ethos easily. If you show a genuine passion for engineering and a willingness to help yourself, you won’t go far wrong.
