University Industrial Placement Student Review

In the Discovery Imaging team, I was assigned a project that aimed to use spatial transcriptomics for the study of atopic dermatitis. At first, I learned how to section tissues and perform immunohistochemistry protocols, and learnt how to interpret and present my data to my team and stakeholders. Once my project started, I spent less time in the lab to analysis data in RStudio. Throughout the placement, I had autonomy to organise my time and experiments.

I was given a lot of independence and responsibility from the beginning after learning key techniques, though I was supported throughout my placement whenever needed or wanted.

I have learnt how to section FFPE and fresh frozen tissue samples, produce IHCs, assay development, spatial transcriptomics analysis, single-cell RNA sequencing in RStudio, interpretation and visualisation of results, presentation skills and effective communication within a team.

I was given a lot of support and guidance by my team for both technical skills and scientific research, as well as personal and professional development. Everyone I have interacted with have been keen to offer guidance and support.

In general AstraZeneca has fostered a positive environment for placement students. As Early Talent colleagues are found throughout the company, I have found that placement students are not isolated from other students or from members of their teams. The opportunity for mentorship enables students to develop technically and professionally with the support of experienced members of the company.

I have greatly enjoyed my placement in no short part to my lovely supervisor and line manager who have taught and supported me throughout the year, as well as to my wider team for being welcoming and friendly. The placement programme has enabled me to develop as an early career scientist within my project, but has also provided several other opportunities throughout the year to socialise with other students or develop in other areas.
