Overview of Experience
Please give an overview of the insight and what was involved on a day-to-day basis.
On a day-to-day basis I completed tasks at a trainee to associate level. The tasks commonly included research, drafting, summarising and proofreading. In addition to this, I attended internal meetings, within which I gave presentations, as well as attending client meetings.
What was it like understanding all about the business and potential roles available?
I really enjoyed learning about the business more. From a law firm's website, it can be difficult to discover what differentiates them however, when inside a firm, this becomes apparent very quickly. I already knew a lot about the potential roles available, in this case a training contract, and therefore found it most beneficial to learn about the business itself.

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
I learnt and developed a number of skills throughout the internship including:
- Networking.
- Legal drafting.
- Research skills.
A key element I learnt is to how to balance the commercial interests of clients alongside the application of the law. While the law itself is important, it is crucial that the outcome aligns with the commercial objectives of the client.

What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
It was very welcoming and an uplifting environment. When speaking to people, it was clear how passionate they were about their jobs and they were always extremely happy to explain any projects that they were working on more.

To what extent did you enjoy the insight?
I thoroughly enjoyed the insight. It gave me a true opportunity to see the firm itself and provided me the basis to gain a greater understanding of the work that the firm carry out.

What tips or advice would you give to others applying to DLA Piper
Try to stand out through your written application as this will be the most difficult stage to differentiate yourself. If you are on the internship, make sure to be yourself and reach out to people if you are interested in their area of practice. Everyone will be very receptive to this.
