Summer Intern Review

The internship consisted of seats in two practice areas. I was given varied work each day, alongside my work towards the group project (presentation) which I was part of in my first seat. The work from each practice area involved e.g., proof reading, drafting documents and emails, populating documents, and due diligence.

It was interesting to learn about how the law works in practice, particularly how different tasks can be shared and distributed. I also enjoyed experiencing the culture of the firm and found the work dynamic to be very inclusive (e.g., with lack of focus on hierarchy in the day to day running of the business).

I have learnt new skills related to practical tasks such as how to draft documents including letters and research memos, and how to conduct legal research efficiently. I have also enhanced existing skills such as client communication (e.g., drafting emails to clients), and have been able to implement my teamworking skills within a new environment and context.

The atmosphere was welcoming, with everyone being friendly. When I offered my help to the people within my practice areas they were often happy to send me tasks to aid my development and broaden my experience. The feedback and general chats I have had have all been extremely friendly, and I have appreciated the lack of focus on 'hierarchy' with everyone getting along just the same no matter their job title/level.

I enjoyed gaining insight into the world of law in a practical sense, beyond my theoretical knowledge from university. It has been great to get to know my fellow interns and form friendships, alongside networking generally within the firm. And my responsibilities (i.e. the work set) have been very varied - I have felt that the work I have produced has been valued which is great at such an early stage in my career.
