Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
As a Materials Metallurgist, my primary responsibility is to analyze and evaluate metal components to ensure their suitability for production and to investigate any failures. On a day-to-day basis, this involves preparing and examining samples through sectioning, microscopy, and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). By closely inspecting microstructures, fracture surfaces, and material defects, I provide critical insights into the root causes of failures or confirm that materials meet the required standards.
I collaborate closely with Quality Assurance and Engineering departments, supporting them by delivering technical expertise and data that guide product improvements, quality control, and process optimization. My work helps maintain high product reliability, minimize downtime, and ensure compliance with industry standards.
Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
Yes, I was given considerable responsibility during my placement. I was trusted to pilot the SEM microscope and operate other expensive, sensitive equipment, which gave me hands-on experience with advanced metallurgical analysis tools. Additionally, I was tasked with the procurement of new, costly equipment and consumables. After completing my training, I was entrusted to manage orders with minimal supervision, demonstrating reliability and attention to detail. I was also given the opportunity to lead my own projects aimed at increasing lab efficiency, which helped me develop project management skills and contribute directly to improving workflows.
