Student Site manager Review

Half my day I would spend on site - completing inspections or supporting my seniors with site logistics, material management and waste management. Each day I would summarise the daily progress onto a project diary including labour and work activities which was collated through sub-contractor interactions. The other half of my time I spent in the office filing paper work related to the project build, completing the small but necessary tasks which captured project data or supporting my team-members with their duties, including both the commercial and site team.

I was given responsibility over various tasks and activities which were beneficial to my understanding of the duties that my role had on paper. These duties developed throughout my placement to larger scales as I had more to take on - for example inspections. However, the majority of tasks were repetitive throughout the duration of the project and did not pose as much mental challenge or decision making as I would have liked to gain.

Key skills I have learnt include a great use of Microsoft excel, writing summative reports, reading structural drawings.
Key skills I have developed on include presentation and public speaking skills, clear and professional communication, remaining organised, planning flexibly and active listening.

Knowledge and expertise was readily available when I went to my peers with construction or site related questions, sub-contractors on site were also very helpful with this. My peers were also happy for me to sit in meetings and discussions to understand the project better. I was given access to various tools online including training courses as well as some in person.

The general culture and atmosphere was practical, level headed and light hearted. It was clear that I had joined a group of people who enjoyed the challenges of their career as well as social activities as well.

I enjoyed my placement because it gave me exposure to the industry from many different angles. I was placed on a project which had a lot to it and plenty of room for growth in knowledge. I enjoyed who I worked with and where I worked, it was a friendly and welcoming experience. The main draw back for me was that the delegation of tasks and responsibility could have been better distributed to help me connect better with my role.
