University Industrial Placement Student Review

Day-to-day I am mostly lab based, conducting experiments to support the design of commercially viable drug substance synthetic routes and manufacturing methods. My responsibilities include: management of my own work pakcage, safe lab conduct so associated SHE standard, and presenting information for discussion at team meetings.

I had a small amount of responsibility to ensure I was progress my own project at a sufficient pace. I also had the responsilbility to ensure I was always meeting the correct SHE standard in the workplace. Outside of project work, I picked up additional responsibilities such as organising team volunteering days and unit-wide events.

My placement has provided me the opportunity to learn many new skills, in particular, skills surrounding pratical chemical kinetics and high-throughput experimentation. My project area was also completely new to me when I started, my technical and experimental knowledge of oligonucleotide synthesis has improved significantly. There has also been lost of opportunites to advance my existing skills in general chemisty through the placement.

I recieved lots of support and mentoring from my imdiate supervisor, who helped with any technical and non-technical related problems during my placement. My manager also provided plenty of guidance and support. Finally, specialist experts provided specific technical support on any technical problems that I faced.

I thought the company culture and general atomosphere was amazing, from my first day I felt very welcome and everyone I have interacted with has been so friendly. The culture is such that if I have a problem I would feel very comfortable going up to anyone to ask for help.

I have really enjoyed my placement, I has been such a great experience to advance my technical expertise. The experience has been a very weolcomed challenge that has pushed me slighlty out of my comfort zone, to learn new skills and develop myself as professional.
