Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
1. Liaising with business units and compliance officers to understand the process being tested
2. Plan the review, e.g. identify its scope, applicable regulations/company policies
3. Gather cases to test
4. Conduct the test (typically via transactional testing)
5. Other secondary duties, e.g. re-writing testing manuals, preparing and presenting "knowledge shares"
Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
Yes. Since I was involved in conducting a real compliance test, I wasn't given full responsibility for my project. However, I feel I was given as much responsibility/independence as possible and was empowered to make my own judgements and share my opinions.

Support and Guidance

How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
My line manager and buddy have both been very welcoming and helpful. I interact with them on a daily basis, despite the internship being virtual. I also feel I have the support of the wider compliance team, who I have relied upon on several occasions for advice.

Company Culture

What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
Genuinely welcoming and supportive. I feel that it is assumed that everyone wants to perform well and so the emphasis was on helping each other to achieve, rather than pressuring individuals to succeed/hit targets. Where targets couldn't be met, stakeholders were understanding.

Overall Experience

To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?
It's been great. I don't want to work in compliance testing simply because the nature of the job (focused on the company's internal functions) doesn't interest me (I'm more interested in the bigger picture/strategy). However, laws/regulations and how large companies operate are two interest areas for me. The internship has given me an amazing opportunity to explore both and so I couldn't have asked for more.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend American Express to a friend?
Yes
What advice would you give to others applying to American Express
Show that you are a friendly/caring team-oriented person. American Express seems to genuinely emphasise creating a welcoming/supportive work culture and so I expect such personality traits are key to hiring managers. My second interview (with the UK Compliance VP) was wholly focused on the person I am, rather than my skills/experience/goals.
