Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
I manage and complete regular client projects (I.E. Weekly, monthly or quarterly deliveries). This can be checking an automated process did not error or it can be manually running templated code. I also work on automating the processes that are currently manual. I write and run code in SAS, SQL and Python. I work on ad-hoc projects which mostly involve taking client data and prepping it and running it through templated code. Sometimes I do bespoke analysis which involves writing my own code.
Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
When I joined, a particular process was moving from one team into my team and I became responsible for it. I handled most of the deliveries using this product and trained the rest of my team. I am also responsible for a number of client deliveries using other products.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
I have developed data analysis skills. I have learned to write code in SAS and SQL and some Python. I have developed communication skills from interacting with both people internally in different teams and external clients. This has involved creating presentations, sending emails and speaking on calls. I have improved my problem solving and resilience as things often go wrong and I have to be able to fix them.

Support and Guidance

How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
The Early Careers team had regular check-ins with us. I had meetings with my manager on a weekly to monthly basis. I also had the opportunity for 'Skip' meetings with my manager's manager. My team in general support me when I have issues. I was also encouraged to reach out to the other placement students and graduates for support if I needed it.

Company Culture

What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
People were generally lovely and easy to get along with. Lots of people were willing to help and support. However, there was a lot of negativity surrounding pay for the non-placement/grad roles. A number of people left the team and others outside of the team were made redundant which also contributed to the negative feel. The replacements for the members of the team who left were hired outside of the UK and while I enjoyed working with them, it did affect the ability to connect with people when I never saw them face-to-face.

Overall Experience

To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?
Overall, I enjoyed my placement a lot. I had a rocky start because my team had never had a placement student before and so I did not have a particularly big workload but that did improve and I still had a good time.
