Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
Working in a team to maintain the volkswagen-vans.co.uk website. This also involves working with agencies to update content, create reports, and improving overall user experience of the website based on this. It also involved collating monthly KPI reports on our website performance and helping to present this to stakeholders within the business.
Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
Yes, so much more responsibility than I expected as well. My team are heavily dependent on me and value me in my role so much. My workload is good and constant, I'm never bored for lack of work to do. My team are always asking me for help as there are some areas of the role I have excelled at, such as editing the website in the back-end content management system.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
Communication has been a big one I've been able to develop, as working with agencies and building a professional relationship with them is really important for success in my role. More specific skills such as working in our website CMS has been new to me and I've got very good at it working in this role. My ability to understand and communicate data has also hugely improved. Presenting skills have also developed as I've been able to do so in front of many different audiences, including the whole of my brand/business and the leadership team.

Support and Guidance

How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
As much as I need. I have weekly one to ones with 2 managers in my team to ensure I have dedicated time to ask questions or for support, but I also work very closely with my team, so am able to just spin around at my desk to talk to them and seek guidance, support, or ask questions. As an undergraduate cohort, we also recieved more general training and support on various topics such as confidence, career advice and personal development.

Company Culture

What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
Generally positive. It is easy to tell when people are under stress however, as the atmosphere and morale can get quite low, but we have dedicated teams who aim to support people during these times. Overall, the culture is very good and inclusive and the employees are happy, friendly and all get on.

Overall Experience

To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?
On a scale of 1 to 10, I'd place it at an 8. I've enjoyed this placement so much and had so many great opportunities during it. I've also made some great friends through the undergraduate scheme as there is a cohort of around 35 of us, which has made the social aspect of the placement very good.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend Volkswagen Group UK to a friend?
Yes
What advice would you give to others applying to Volkswagen Group UK
My advice would be to consider your living situation while you're here, whether you could commute to Milton Keynes or find accommodation here, as it's not a student city so they are very limited on HMOs and don't have typical student housing, so can be quite tricky. Another bit of advice would be to apply, even if you have no interest or intentions towards the automotive industry. While you get great insight into the world of automotive, you're not expected to know anything about it, or even have an interest for it.
