Overview of Experience

Please give an overview of the insight and what was involved on a day-to-day basis.
The morning consisted of several presentations from partners, associates and trainees from different departments within the office. Following each of these, we were given the opportunity to ask further questions, and discuss any particular points of interest. In the afternoon, we completed an assessment task as a group, supervised by two partners. The day finished with a networking event with other members of the team.
What was it like understanding all about the business and potential roles available?
This was a valuable insight into life as a trainee at the firm. We were able to learn about a typical day of a trainee in different departments, the tasks they are expected to complete, and support and professional development networks available to them. Speaking to professionals from different practice areas allowed us to develop a deeper understanding their work and the firm's direction.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
The insight day was particularly useful to expanding my knowledge and understanding of the work, culture and training contract at Irwin Mitchell. Regarding skills, the assessment task encouraged us to take an evaluative approach how we deal with pressure, maintain motivation and manage our time. I found this a good opportunity to reflect on my own approach in the context of the ideas of different members of my group.

I would recommend that, prior to the Insight Day, other applicants research the different practice areas covered by their office of choice. This allows you to fully engage with the day and ask informative, thoughtful questions. On the day itself, I would recommend that applicants ask plenty of questions to learn as much as possible about the firm.
