Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
As a Management Intern at Enterprise Rent-A-Car in the Dublin Airport, I worked as a fast-paced, customer-focused team, interacting with both the customers and my colleagues working behind the scenes. My daily responsibilities include delivering exceptional customer service in a fast-paced, high-volume airport location, handling the full rental process from reservations and checkouts to returns and issue resolution, supporting branch performance through outstanding customer service and upselling of protection products and developed my leadership skills by training new staff and taking initiative in solving customer issues, often under pressure and tight deadlines.
Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
As an intern at one of Enterprise's busiest locations, my responsibilities covered all core aspects of the business, including providing high-quality customer service, managing vehicle logistics including reservations and checkout to returns and damage assessments, contributing to sales performance including upselling additional products such as GPS, insurance and vehicle upgrades, and assisting in team leadership. My daily interactions consisted of internal and external communications, with my branch colleagues, managers, customers, corporate accounts and fleet logistic colleagues. Daily tasks include opening procedures such as logging onto internal systems, reviewing the day's reservations and preparing for customer arrivals, greeting customers, completing rental agreements, processing payments and helping with daily reports for closing tasks. The Intern of the Year project pushed my limits and encouraged me to exceed above and beyond my own boundaries and expectations.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
I developed a comprehensive set of transferable skills that have significantly prepared me for a future career in business, management or customer-facing roles. As the environment is fast-paced and high-pressure, I have developed rapidly across several key areas, including customer service excellence, sales, time management ant problem-solving. Working at one of the busiest branches in the country, I learned how to deliver outstanding customer service under pressure, dealing with a variety of different customers with diverse needs and expectations. I developed strong communication skills, as well as regularly working towards sales targets of additional products and items, managing multiple responsibilities at once and developing my quick thinking and resolution skills.

Support and Guidance

How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
I received a high level of support and guidance at Dublin Airport, both formally through the company's online and face-to-face training programs and informally through daily interactions with my colleagues and managers. The structured environment is well-developed and designed to give placement students genuine hands-on responsibility while ensuring they are never left alone in need. This environment really gave me the confidence to grow and flourish on this placement, making me feel as though I had a very solid foundation to build from. I had regular one-on-one check ins with assistant and branch managers who provided feedback on my performance and helped me set goals for continuous improvements. The team environment here is truly extraordinary, everybody works hard but there is a strong culture of teamwork and shared success. I could not recommend this placement more, I truly believe it enriched my life personally and professionally in ways I couldn't imagine.

Company Culture

What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
The company culture was one of the most enjoyable aspects of the placement, as the atmosphere is extremely friendly, energetic and fast-paced, with a clear emphasis on teamwork, mutual support and professional development. What really stood out to me was how down-to-earth and approachable everyone was, regardless of their role or seniority. The team was largely made up of young, ambitious people, many of whom were either recent graduates or current trainees themselves. To become a manager, the individual must start as a trainee and build their way, meaning everybody I worked with has been in my role at some stage, which gave me comfort and created a relatable and friendly dynamic. While the job could be intense at times with the high-volume of customers, the culture made it easier to stay positive and motivated. I truly believe the culture was one of the greatest terms of this placement. I really liked how the managers and senior staff worked alongside the team on the ground, fostering a sense of equality.

Overall Experience

To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?
I cannot express how genuinely I enjoyed my placement at Enterprise! It was a fast-paced, challenging and highly rewarding experience that gave me real insight into what it's like to work in a busy, customer-focused business environment. Every day was different, which kept things interesting and engaging for me, with no two days being the same. I enjoyed the responsibility I was given from day one, and I appreciated being treated as a full team member, not 'just an intern' or a student. The level of trust and autonomy gave me a real sense of purpose in my role, and I truly don't think I could have imagined a better placement than here. It feels like home.

If you're considering applying for a placement at Enterprise Rent-A-Car, my biggest piece of advice is: be ready to work hard, stay positive and take every opportunity to learn. No two days are the same, embrace the journey and remember that your hard work here is rewarded, the more you put into the role, the more you'll get out of it. Be ready to learn fast, work hard and get involved in every part of the business. If you do, this placement can be one of the most valuable and enjoyable experiences of your degree.
