Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
On a day-to-day basis I am responsible to raise any non-conformances that are brought to my attention. This entails, raising them on our system so that these are tracked, and reaching out to the necessary suppliers/other relevant stakeholders for further information to find the root cause of the issue. I then continue to monitor and manage these issues until long term solutions have been put in place to prevent them from happening again.
Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
Yes, I hosted a weekly meeting with an external supplier of ours. Although I always had the support from my team if I needed, I was primarily responsible for providing them with the latest updates, and staying up to date with any queries they had. Also the webpage creation was a solo project which felt very rewarding but definitely nerve wracking as the responsibility for its function and usage was down to me.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
I’ve become more confident using Excel, which I initially found daunting. I now track open non-conformances and create monthly reports on the Quality department’s performance. I’ve also grown braver in presenting—early in my placement, I began hosting a weekly meeting with an external supplier. This greatly boosted my confidence, as I felt trusted by my team and became more comfortable speaking in a professional setting.

Support and Guidance

How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
Initially, I was shadowing the previous placement student which felt like a nice stepping stone to ease into my new work routine. I always felt I had the support of my team when asking questions, and that I could make mistakes without feeling like a burden. But after a while I felt very independent and trusted by the team to work solo at times, but I knew their support was always available if I needed it.

Company Culture

What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
I believe that Cummins heavily focuses on staff morale and happiness, which in turn creates a friendlier atmosphere. No matter which team, if I had any queries or uncertainties, there was always someone more than willing to help out. My team have constantly checked in with me to make sure I am okay and thriving in my placement too.

Overall Experience

To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?
Although my placement wasn't in a field which I initially had much interest in, the kind nature of my team and other employees made my experience unforgettable. So this is a sign to be open minded and try something new because you might love it more than you'd think!

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend Cummins to a friend?
Yes
What advice would you give to others applying to Cummins
Be open minded! I was nervous to work for a company that focuses primarily on diesel and engines, but quite honestly my day to day is very different!
Even if you don't get a role in your preferred job area, still apply! There is loads of opportunity for departmental change after your placement, and plenty of job advertisements for graduate students too if you wish to return after.
