Finance Intern Review

My role as a Finance Intern sits around the Commercial Risk and Cloud Billing teams, with a focus on Credit Assessment. I have been actively involved in:
Credit Risk Function: Shadowing credit underwriters, reviewing customer financials, and helping set credit limits.
Operational Support: Managing customer name changes, processing order tasks, and contributing to fraud detection workflows.
Reporting & Analysis: Supporting the team with reporting tasks, including using tools like Concur for standard financial reports.

Yes, 100%. I was tasked to independently manage and resolve invoice and billing issues, advise colleagues on internal tools and policy compliance, help present intern projects quarterly and mirror day to day activities of a full time, permanent employee, including senior positions as well.

Due to there not being a previous finance intern, I did not receive a handover when I joined, however, the support from my team, the finance department and also the L&D team was amazing. Everything is available on the online learning platform, and the company supports apprenticeships/courses for personal career development.

The company culture was the first thing that took me by surprise on my first day. Softcat's culture is unmatched from what I have seen, and they pride themselves on it by plastering their values on all their work. It is especially apparent in day-to-day activities where you are collaborating with employees you are not familiar with from around the wider business. Softcat uses OneHub and spotlights as a way to give recognition to each other. We are encouraged to use the platform as much as possible as a way of saying thank you to people around us.

I found the placement engaging and enjoyable, and would definitely recommend working at Softcat. I loved spending time in smaller sub teams, allowing for deeper discussions and stronger group dynamics. Being given the opportunity to connect with others in social events like Bus Ops and Kick Off was a highlight to my placement as I felt that it allowed me to take a step away from BAU, and let me reflect on the internship as a whole.
