Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
My role involved getting to know people within the organisation, the products and services offered to clients and the type of clients we covered. It was very relationships based. I worked a lot with powerpoint creating decks and slides as well excel used for calculations and formatting graphs.
In terms of day to day it was mostly scheduling zoom catch ups with people, getting on with slide decks, doing the trainings provided and understanding more about the products and services offered.
Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
I was definitely given responsibilities that correlated with my level. I was responsible for building decks and assisting the associate with various small tasks that needed to be done. A director also relied on me to get some work done for them.
I definitely felt like my work was adding value to the team and I saw how everything came together. The responsibility level was optimum as I had a lot to do without feeling overwhelmed

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
Yes I definitely learned how to make powerpoint slides look nicer and more professional. I also learned the importance of building a good network and making sure people know who you are and where you sit within the organisation. My excel skills also greatly improved and HSBC provides training on different elements such as presentation skills, hard skills and soft skills.
Relationship management is first and foremost about keeping clients happy and how to build and maintain those relationships

Support and Guidance

How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
I definitely received a lot of support during my internship. HR organised many events and trainings such as networking events and speaker series. I also had weekly catch ups with my manager to see where I am at and what I am doing and to get feedback on how to improve. We were also assigned a buddy that could help us with things. Fellow inters were also supportive.
There were senior stakeholders also available if we needed a quick chat or advice.

Company Culture

What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
HSBC culture is definitely amongst the best in the banking industry. Flexible working is currently encouraged and people are encored to take breaks and not experience burn out. Everyone is open and always happy to catch up for a quick chat or advice session. Even VERY senior leaders are approachable and just an email away. Being a good team member is encouraged and you are made to feel welcomed from day one. Diversity and inclusion is also a main priority and it is taken seriously.

Overall Experience

To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?
I enjoyed every single day of my internship. Obviously work is work and you have to be productive but I felt like a valued team member even though I was just an intern. The work was enjoyable and I had enough time to talk to people on zoom while still being productive. The company culture is good, flexible working is encouraged and you don't feel monitored or micro-managed in any way. Also internal mobility is encouraged which is really good

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend HSBC to a friend?
Yes
What advice would you give to others applying to HSBC
Definitely do your research! HSBC takes culture fit very seriously. Be nice, humble and ask a lot of questions. Definitely know your technicals as well and be willing to learn (without being annoying). Foster relationships with different people and so forth. Track your work, make sure you are updating your manager of what you are doing.
Culture was a huge factor for me and I felt that HSBC culture suits my personality and my work approach.
