Overview of Role
Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
My role involves carrying out specialist structural engineering analysis within well-organised projects. These projects can vary significantly which keeps each day exciting and helps you to grow your technical knowledge constantly. Besides technical work such as computer modelling, the ability to work effectively with your team and other members of the business is an important attribute as this is required everyday.
Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
I began my first project on my 2nd day of the internship. This was fantastic as it meant I was trusted with responsibility very early on and this allowed me to get heavily involved from the beginning. This opportunity definitely excelled my technical knowledge quickly and allowed me to progress well in a short amount of time. Since then, I have been kept involved in many interesting projects and supported throughout.

Skills Development
Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
I've developed my understand of finite element modelling, competency at CAE, technical writing (i.e. reports), time management skills and more. I have also gained a much deeper understand of how engineering companies operate and certain procedures that are required for work to be done to a high quality and in a safe way.

Support and Guidance
How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
I was paired with a mentor and would have regular 1 to 1 meetings with them to monitor my progression of mutually agreed goals. It was also an opportunity for me to ask questions about anything about the business that didn't directly relate to my work but I was still curious about. Having this support that meant if I was ever struggling, I'd know there was always somebody that could guide me.

Company Culture
What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
The company has a very healthy culture and people are encouraged to prioritise their well-being. The flexible/hybrid work style allows people to manage their other commitments outside of work whilst still having the time to get their work completed. This creates a happier atmosphere which allows for the whole business to run smoother by ensuring people actually do enjoy their job and can still have a life around it.

Overall Experience
To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?
I currently a quarter of the way through my placement but so far it has been everything I could hope for from a placement and more. The sense of responsibility I have been entrusted with has made me feel like a valued member of the team and my colleagues are a pleasure to work with everyday. This opportunity has been an invaluable experience to allow for my development as an engineering student.

What advice would you give to others applying to Frazer-Nash Consultancy
If you are interested in a highly dynamic workplace where your projects can keep you on your toes with exciting work then Frazer-Nash Consultancy is a fantastic place for this. I can only speak from the perspective of a student, however, I have learnt things far beyond what I've learnt in university already which I am able to apply to very meaningful work everyday. This makes the experience fulfilling and something to feel proud of.
