Trainee Engineer Review

I worked as a graduate site engineer in one of the structures' teams, involving and managing 2 Viaducts and 1 Overbridge.
Day-to-day tasks that I had to carry out are listed below:
•Concrete orders and booking testers
•Preparing weekly permits beforehand
•Setting out using various instruments i.e. total station, GPS and Laser Level
•Before, during and after concrete pour checks
•AutoCAD Modelling and As-builts
•Steel reinforcement checks
•Daily diaries
•Site-specific Inductions
•Temporary work checks
•Managing site!

Yes, I got lots of opportunities and responsibilities through the placement to enhance my knowledge and skills. As a site engineer, one of my biggest responsibilities was to manage one site independently. I got involved in lots of decision-making stages, which gave me broader ideas of why specific activities are carried out in certain ways.

I found great satisfaction in managing tasks on-site or using engineering instruments such as total station for checks and setting out. Each new challenge allowed me to develop my engineering skills further. I also developed my AutoCAD skills to create 3D models of my Viaducts. Although it was challenging extracting all the data from various engineering drawings, it was equally rewarding to see other site engineers making use of these models to ensure everything was built according to design.

Many people helped me and supported me throughout, not only with work-related things but also academically. I never struggled or had an issue finding help or support.

The company culture is collaborative and supportive. Employees feel valued, and there's a strong emphasis on teamwork, open communication, and work-life balance. The general atmosphere was energetic and positive, focusing on professional development and mutual respect.

I really enjoyed my year placement. I can not wait to finish my last year of university and go back to work with the same company.
